Saturday July 20, 2013

SAN ANTONIO (July 20, 2013) – The 2012 Central Division Champion San Antonio Talons (9-8) fell to the Spokane Shock (13-4) on Saturday night at Spokane Arena with a score of 77- 30 in front of a crowd of 8,485. Spokane’s Erik Meyer completed 8 of 15 for 153 yards and 4 touchdowns b, adding one on the ground before being relieved by Arvell Nelson. Talon quarterback Rohan Davey had a rough night, with 8 turnovers and 5 interceptions.

After receiving Rowan’s 56 yard kickoff, it took Davey and the Talons offense only four plays to find the endzone. Talon quarterback Rohan Davey found red hot receiver D.J. Stephens for a 39 yard touchdown to put San Antonio on the board first. On Spokane’s opening drive, Meyer struggled to find receivers, and the Talons leading defense was able to hold a sharp Spokane offense. A 24 yard field goal by Demos on fourth down gave the Talons an early 10-0 lead.

Spokane answered back quickly with a Meyer to Jorden connection that San Antonio is all too familiar with. As the Talon lead begins to dwindle, Davey is intercepted by Paul Stephens and Kamar Jorden finds the end zone once again to put the Shock on top 13-10 after a failed extra point attempt by Rowan.

To begin the second quarter Davey comes up with a huge third down conversion, finding Baker for a nine yard touchdown to give the Talons a tight one possession lead. On the ensuing kickoff Spokane’s Terran Sanders returns the ball 56 yards for a touchdown to strip the Talon lead once again. San Antonio can’t seem to catch a break, Davey is sacked for a loss of 7 by Terrance Taylor. The fumble is recovered by Briggs for another Shock touchdown 26-17.

Davey, trying to light a spark on offense is intercepted by Stephens once again. Meyer effortlessly waltzed into the endzone for a one yard rushing score. The Shock begin to run away with this Friday night matchup 33-17. On 4th and one, Davey finds Ruffins on a short sideline pass taking the Shock defense by surprise, Ruffins turned nothing into 27 yards. Davey connects with Stephens on the next play to cut the Shock lead 24-33.

The Talons misfortune continues in the third quarter as Davey is intercepted several more times. The stingy Shock offense completes 5 touchdowns in the third quarter to San Antonio’s zero.

Spokane receiving duo Adron Tennell and Kamar Jorden were a nightmare for the Talons once again combining for five touchdowns on the night. San Antonio was able to scrape together one last score since their last touchdown in the second quarter to gather a final score of 30-77.
The Talons return to action in Week 19 where they come home to the Alamo city on Saturday, July 27, 2013 to take on the Philadelphia Soul. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm CST.
