Celebrating the history of the Arena Football League

Welcome Back Kats!

On a bleak rainy afternoon in Nashville, local Arena Football fans got the news they were hoping for. Tennessee Titans’ owner K.S. “Bud” Adams confirmed that he will exercise his option to buy an expansion team. While this will be a brand new team it will have several familiar elements. The team will have the same name, same colors, same logo, and same head coach as the team that went to the last two Arena Bowls.

During a radio interview, Adams indicated that the NFL’s inaction on their option to buy nearly half of the Arena League made the decision more difficult, but the deal with NBC to air AFL games sealed the decision for him.

The biggest questions remain where the team will play and when they will join the league. Adams would prefer to begin play next season in the Gaylord Entertainment Center – the only home the Kats had known. For the to happen, a more favorable lease would have to be negotiated than the one which kept the former Kats (now the Georgia Force) from making a profit. With the Gaylord Entertainment Center currently running a $5 million deficit, the city and NHL Nashville Predators may be more willing to deal with Adams than they were with former Kats owner Mark Bloom.
