Kats Drop the Ball – Repeatedly

The Nashville Kats came up with an effective game plan against the San Jose SaberCats.  They kept the score low; only seven points were scored in the first quarter.  They ran the ball at will and used the run to set up the pass; San Jose was unable to defend against their two-back offense. Their defense was very effective, turning the SaberCats away four times.  Only one thing went wrong.  They dropped the ball, early and often.

The game could not have started any better.  After stopping San Jose’s opening drive,  the Kats’ passing game moved them quickly to midfield.  Once they got the ball into San Jose territory, Nashville took full advantage of the new free substitution rule by removing a wide receiver and inserting a second back.  With Dan Alexander and Terrell Browden both carrying the ball  (and blocking for each other) the ground game was almost unstoppable.

“They can run the ball,” agreed Sabercats head coach Darren Arbet, “That’s Pat Sperduto football.  He does a great job in the running game, better than anybody’s done it in the history of the game.”

Sounds good so far, right?  Well that when the fumbles started.  Four lost fumbles were enough to offset an outstanding performance by the defense.  It seemed like every time the game seemed to be within reach, a football would squirt loose and be recovered by a player in a white jersey.

“You can’t win football games putting the ball on the ground,” Kat’s head coach Pat Sperduto stated.  That sums the night up about as well as anything.
