Kats and Destroyers are Similar Teams

Haunted by penalties in their loss to Grand Rapids, the Kats tightened up in last week’s game, only giving San Jose one first down by penalty. Sperduto is still not satisfied, “It’s not an improvement. You want to get down to zero.”
The UT Connection Returns
WR/LB Cory Fleming saw limited playing time in his first game of the season last week. He says his timing is not quite there yet, “I think everything is going okay right now health-wise, I’m just trying to get back into the flow of the game.”
He expects to see more playing time this week. “I just hope to play as much as possible once I’m in there. That’s the biggest thing, once I’m in there to just help the team.” Against San Jose last week Fleming connected with University of Tennessee teammate QB Andy Kelly for three receptions and 29 yards.
Injury Updates
I asked Kats’ trainer Bob Fresorger to review his constantly growing list of patients. Here is his rundown:
DS Kirk Pointer (plantar fascia) “That’s such a difficult injury to manage on the turf. We did some running today on the turf and he said that it became more painful.”
WR/LB L.C. Stevens (separated shoulder) “He’s out this week. His shoulder is sore and he doesn’t have much strength in it.”
DS Robert Davis (sprained hip flexor muscle) “He’s rehabbed fine from that. He could possibly play on Friday.”
OL/DL William “Big Nasty” Gaines (toe) “He got his toe stepped on out in San Jose. It ripped the nail off his big toe. We had it x-rayed, no fracture, so it’s just a pain thing.”
Recent Roster Move
The Kats have signed FB/LB Dan Curran from their practice squad. The 6’ 0” rookie rushed for 1,059 yards in his senior year at the University of New Hampshire. In the pre-season game against the Los Angeles Avengers he scored a touchdown on a 37 yard run.
Off the Field
Kats cheerleader Tara did not become Miss Kentucky, but she did win one of the pageant’s major awards. “I won the Interview Award so that really meant a lot to me. It is the public speaking and communication skills that will be most beneficial to me later on in life - not my dancing or walking around in a swimsuit and evening gown.”
Charliy Nash has covered both incarnations of the Nashville Kats, and now has make the 2 hour drive to Huntsville for an Arena Football fix. He also covers the Tennessee Titans as a blogger for nfl.com and still hopes this will eventually lead to a paying gig.
