Breaking it Down – Week 20 2011 & Playoff Preview

Andy Lopusnak
Thursday July 28, 2011

After twenty grueling weeks and 156 games, the longest AFL regular season has come to close. Lucky for you, this final regular season edition of Breaking it Down is perhaps the longest single article about the AFL in league history. Nearly 7,000 words of wisdom chock full of nuggets, morsels and all sorts of chewy and yummy AFL notes that'll fill you up while you're not watching live AFL playoff games in your living room this week.

Before we start recapping Week 20 and the 2011 season...

YOU'VE GOT SOME SPLAINING TO DO
When Georgia (11-7) travels to Cleveland (10-8) to play the Gladiators it will mark just the second time in league history that a team with a better record was the road team in the postseason. Last year, the Tulsa Talons (10-6) hosted the Tampa Bay Storm (11-5). Tulsa was smoked by 30 points (68-38).

Prior to 2005, the AFL seeded everybody based on record - divisions and conferences meant nothing as evidence of the 2004 Eastern Division champion New York Dragons failing to make the playoffs. That changed in 2005 when the league decided to make the conferences and divisions mean something.

Since then, the playoffs have been separated into conferences with division winners guaranteed a home playoff game and the winners of each conference being represented in the ArenaBowl. From 2005-08, the playoff rules stated that "based on first round games, this scenario also gives a wild card team an opportunity to host a Conference Championship games because teams are re-seeded after the first round."

However, the AFL rules since the league came back from the brink state that there's no re-seeding and that the Conference Championship games and ArenaBowl is decided by the team with the higher seed. I checked the 2009 af2 rules just in case the league did a "copy and paste" job and those rules state "the team with the better overall record hosts the Conference Championship game."

Now if Cleveland (10-8) wins this week and Orlando (11-7) beats Jacksonville, the league will be in a huge dilemma. The Gladiators are the #2 seed only because they play in the crappy East Division and rank 13th in attendance - both the #3 seeded and #4 seeded teams have better records than Cleveland does. Not only did Orlando lead the league in attendance and have a better overall record than Cleveland, the Predators destroyed the Gladiators by 30 points on May 14. Can you imagine the nearly empty Quicken Loans Arena for the lowest attended Conference Championship game in league history and potentially the last game? If it happens, it's going to be a disaster and an embarrassment. In Week 20, Cleveland had a paltry 6,190 in attendance while Orlando more than doubled the Gladiators total (14,982).

RECORD-BREAKING SEASON
With the 18 game season, many records were bound to be broken. Here's a look at the new AFL single-season records set in 2011. This list is not official and could increase if the league puts out a list of the records broken this year. In my over two decades watching, covering and working for teams in this league, I've yet to see this league ever put out such a thing. I always thought something like this should be included in the Record & Fact Book recapping the previous season, but that also has never happened.

AIN"T IT GRAND?
This season, eight teams scored over 1,000 points on the season. Prior to 2011, only four teams in league history ever reached 1,000 points in a season. The 2007 San Jose SaberCats team is the only one to score 1,000 points and win the ArenaBowl in the same season. San Jose also has the distinction of being the only team with a losing record to score 1,000 points in a season.

WHAT THE DUECE?
Spokane kicker Taylor Rowan was one-for-two in two-point drop kick extra points - when was the last time that happened? He made his first attempt, which was after the Shock's first TD that gave Spokane an 8-7 lead. He attempted another after the first play of the second quarter, but missed. That first made 2-point drop kick was the first in the AFL since April 16, 2005 when Columbus Destroyers kicker Steve Videtich made one with 37 seconds to go in a 54-28 lost at New Orleans. In the 24-year history of the league, Rowan becomes just the tenth player to make a two-point drop kick extra point.

After looking at the league's official stats for Rowan's final stats, it looks like the league's stats just don't add up to the right number. It has Rowan at 138 points scored but he should be actually at 139. The league says that he didn't attempt a two-point conversion and needs to fix this to give him the additional point scored for his successful two-point drop kick.

END OF LOCKOUT MEANS BERGERON, WINDSOR & SCACCIA ARE GONE
In Week 20, the three highest profile AFL players with active ties to the NFL didn't play with the lockout at its close. Cleveland WR Troy Bergeron as well as the Arizona tandem of WR Rod Windsor and kicker Fabrizio Scaccia didn't play in Week 20 and won't be available for the postseason. The Rattlers anticipated this and signed future AFL Hall of Fame WR Chris Jackson prior to Week 19 and added kicker Jason Witczak right before this past week's game. Jackson has made an immediate impact with 13 catches for 149 yards with seven scores in his short time back. This past week, he nabbed seven passes for 71 yards with five touchdowns. Witzcak was seven-of-eight on his PATs this week. As for the Gladiators without Bergeron, Dominick Goodman has stepped in and caught 12 passes in each of his last two games for 273 yards with six scores. He has six total scores in his previous eight games before the last two weeks.

NO LIVE NATIONAL TV FOR FIRST ROUND GAMES
With the NFL lockout ending, NFL Network has opted to tape-delay the Orlando-Jacksonville game on its network to show coverage of NFL free agency. The game will instead stream live on NFL.com. I cannot remember a playoff weekend when there wasn't at least one AFL game shown live nationally on TV. My hope is that enough people view the game online that NFL Network begins streaming more AFL games on NFL.com. Since so many cable providers charge additional money for NFL Network or don't offer it at all, the streaming will only help bring more exposure for the league. Let's hope that NFL.com makes it a big deal about it on the main page and doesn't bury it. At the moment of this article's publishing, there's nothing on the main page of NFL.com that says anything about the Orlando-Jacksonville game.

HO STEPS DOWN
On Wednesday, Mike Hohensee resigned as head coach of the Philadelphia Soul after just one year with the team and that his entire staff was fired after a disappointing 6-12 season. With the recent financial woes of the UFL, the team's previous head coach, Bret Munsey, might be available. Munsey guided the Soul to the an ArenaBowl title in 2008 and is currently the director of player personnel of the Virginia Destroyers UFL team (Marty Shottenheimer is their head coach). The UFL delayed the start of training camps by a month and rumors are swirling that the league might fold, which would be perfect for the Soul if the team's trying to re-kindle some of that 2008 magic.

FOOTBALL BEEN BERRY, BERRY GOOD TO ME
New Orleans WR/KR P.J. Berry broke the precious AFL record for all-purpose yardage and total kickoff returns in a single-season in the VooDoo's loss in Week 20. The old all-purpose yardage mark was set in 2003 by Chicago's Antonio Chatman. In league history, there have been just 13 times that someone has reached 3,000 all-purpose yards. Though Berry broke the league mark, he was far from being the best in terms of all-purpose yards per game. That honor goes to Lamont Cooper who averaged an astonishing 247.1 yards per game - Berry averaged just 206.0. Based on yards per game, Berry would rank ninth among the players with 3,000 all-purpose yards in a season. Here's a look at the baker's dozen of 3,000-yard men, which includes Georgia's C.J. Johnson whose 3,295 ranks sixth all-time, but has the lowest per game average of any of the 13.

GRIEB GRABS RECORDS
San Jose QB Mark Grieb set two AFL single-season passing records in the loss to Tampa Bay. With 51.5 seconds left in the first half, he connected with WR James Roe on a five-yard TD strike that cemented the two-time ArenaBowl MVP as the league's single-season passing yardage king. It marked the third time that Grieb has led the league in passing yardage (second all-time to Clint Dolezel's four times). Grieb holds three of the top 13 passing yardage seasons in league annals. As time expired in the game with the SaberCats down by seven, Grieb tossed a prayer to the end zone only to have it picked off and returned for a TD. It was his 25th interception on the season - the most in league single-season history. In the game, Grieb moved into fourth place all-time in passing touchdowns and if he returns in 2012, will likely move to second in passing yards and third in passing TDs (though second place is just 120 scores away).

BLAZE BOOT A FIELD GOAL FINALLY
It took 18 games but the Utah Blaze finally made a field goal attempt. The team finished one-of-three on the year. The three field goal attempts is the lowest number ever attempted in league history. As for the one made FG, it ranks as the second lowest behind the 1989 Chicago Bruisers that had no made FGs in the four-game season.

SAUK IT TO ME
If Utah Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Matt Sauk can take the geriatric Todd Hammel off the streets and get back-to-back 300-yard performances (and without the likes of All-Arena receiver Aaron Boone), then he needs to be a head coach somewhere next season. His performance as offensive coordinator of a team that was previously 2-14 was more impressive than his 2010 run as the offensive coordinator of the ArenaBowl champion Spokane Shock. If you're team sucked in 2011, then you need to make a phone call and hire this up and coming coach (hint, hint New Orleans, Kansas City and Iowa among others). Imagine if this offense was with a team that didn't set the league record for most points allowed.

HIGHEST SCORING TEAMS NOT TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS
In the league's previous 23 season, every team that averaged more than 60 points per game made the playoffs. Not anymore as the Utah Blaze averaged 60.1 points per game and didn't make the playoffs.  Here's a look at the top four scoring teams in league history that didn't qualify for the postseason. All four played after free substitution was established.

FREE SUBSTITUTION = MORE SCORING
In 2007, when the league did away with its traditional Ironman rules that stated that six of the eight players on the field played offense and defense, it was supposedly done to help the defenses and to curb the high scores of games (I heard this directly from multiple high-ranking AFL and team administrators). However, the top four scoring seasons (by game averages) have occurred since the adoption of free substitution. It further increased in 2008 when the Jack linebacker was able to roam more freely. Again, this was suppose to be an advantage for the defense but scores rose by almost three points per game in just one season. This season, the league saw its average points per game dip by almost five points from last season - the biggest decrease from one season in almost two decades.

So why is this? I thought penalties but actually, this season has fewer average penalties accepted and penalty yardage than last year. The only other thing I could think of was the significant number of turnovers. The increase from 3.9 per game to 4.7 doesn't seem big, but it's massive. On average, that's almost an extra turnover per game, which is a huge factor in the points drop - one extra stop is six (or seven or eight) points less on the scoreboard. The average total yards per game increased by nearly 13 yards per game to an all-time high of 299.3 yards per game per team. Passing yards also jumped by almost six yards to a record 275.3. Add the six yards per game per team increase in rushing yards from last season and this adds up to fewer per game points scored.

DYNAMIC DUO
Dallas teammates WR Tiger Jones and FB Derrick Ross were the first teammates since 1997 to lead the league in receiving yards and rushing yards respectively. Jones finished with the second highest total in catches (171) and receiving yardage (2,232) in league history. Ross's 622 rushing yards shattered the previous league record by 26%. His 167 rushing attempts is a new league record and his 39 rushing scores rank second all-time. The duo is the first to lead the league in receptions and rushes as well as yardage since the Dallas Texans did so in 1990.

HE CAN DRIVE 55
Iowa's Jesse Schmidt added five receiving scores in Week 20 to put his final 2011 tally to 55 - the second most in league single-season history. His 334 total points scored this season is also the second most in single-season history. On the year, Schmidt also finished second in receptions (168) and receiving yards (2,171) - both totals stand as the third highest in league single-season history.

BYE, BYE GLOVE
As mentioned in Week 19, Orlando DB Kenny McEntyre played his final regular season game last week and as a going away present, the New Orleans VooDoo gift wrapped him his 96th career interception. The Glove's final regular season totals are staggering compared to the next closest player. In all interception categories, he has nearly double the amount of the next closest player. McEntyre, the league's only three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has been named to the All-Arena team more than any other player to play the game (eight times).

RAY OF HOPE
In Week 20, Orlando's Rayshaun Kizer set the league single-season mark for interceptions when he picked off his 16th pass of the season. His 24 return yards on the interception also secured him the league record for most interception return yards in a season (237). Additionally, Kizer had a league high three interceptions returned for scored in 2011. In just his second season, Kizer has stolen 28 balls, which is the highest number for any two seasons in league history and already puts him at the 28th greatest interceptor in league history.

TAKE IT ON THE RUN BABY
The 2011 season saw a record five players run for at least 300 yards. Two others had at least 294 ground yards. In all, eleven players ran for at least 200 yards and eleven more had at least 100 yards. Pittsburgh and Tulsa each had three players with at least 100 yards on the ground. Georgia, Spokane and Tampa Bay didn't have a player get more than 73 rushing yards.

Now onto the game breakdowns...

PITTSBURGH 61, PHILADELPHIA 48
  • The Power got its first lead with 1:32 left in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way.
  • Pittsburgh had former Spokane QB Bill Stull start under center and he completed 60% of his passes for 260 yards with six touchdowns. His favorite tarter was Michael Washington, who grabbed 11 balls for 155 yards with four scores.
  • The Soul welcomed back WR Donovan Morgan who missed the team's previous game because he signed with the UFL and returned because that fledgling league delayed the start of training camps by 30 days due to financial woes. Morgan posted his AFL-lead tying 13th 100-yard receiving game after catching six passes for 112 yards with one TD.
  • Philadelphia QB Ryan Vena tossed for 267 yards with three TDs and an interception. The pick was his 22nd on the year. In the last two seasons, Vena has thrown for more interceptions (45) than any QB in any two-year period in league history.
  • This game featured just four total penalties.
  • The announced attendance of 16,429 is the largest in the league this season beating the previous high of 16,233 for Spokane's outdoor game in Week 18. Philly's all-time high for a game is 18,741 set in 2008 against Columbus.

UTAH 76, CLEVELAND 69
  • The playoff-bound Gladiators tied the game with 21 seconds to go, but left too much time on the clock and Utah scored with four ticks left when Todd Hammel hit Justin Ore on a 29-yard strike to win the game. Cleveland scored its TD on first down. Poor clock management strikes again.
  • Blaze QB Todd Hammel completed 70.1% of his passes for 355 yards with seven scores and an interception.
  • The 76 points scored by Utah was the highest allowed by Cleveland all season. Entering the game, the Glads had the stingiest defense but after the Utah points spree Cleveland's defense finished the season third in least points allowed.
  • Blaze KR Chris Bocage returned seven kicks for 163 yards including one he returned 56 yards for a touchdown.
  • Utah hit its first field goal of the season in the game - a 34-yarder as time expired in the first half.
  • Cleveland used two QBs with similar results. Kurt Rocco was 10-of-15 for 118 yards with four touchdowns and Troy Weatherhead was 10-of-14 for 178 yards with four scores.
  • The Glads were without star receiver Troy Bergeron because of the NFL lockout situation, but Dominic Goodman stepped in and posted his best game of the season with 12 catches for 144 yards with four scores.
  • Gladiators WR/KR Robert Redd tallied 253 all-purpose yards and three scores in the loss.
  • Cleveland MLB Tom Cheatwood posted a sack and finished the season tied with Tampa Bay's Cliff Dukes for the league lead with 12.5.
  • Cleveland enters the playoffs losing two of its last three games and hasn't played a team with a winning record since beating Georgia 62-48 six games ago. Luckily, for the Glads, they host Georgia this week.

JACKSONVILLE 75, SPOKANE 56
  • Sharks WR/KR Jeff Hughley took the opening kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown and finished with 225 all-purpose yards and three scores.
  • Spokane successfully made a 2-point drop kick extra point after its first touchdown - the first in the AFL since 2005.
  • The game was tied at 26 with 38 seconds left in the first half, but Spokane left too much time on the clock and Jacksonville scored again and never trailed the rest of the way.
  • Sharks QB Aaron Garcia played on the first half since Jacksonville was playing for nothing and he completed 60% of his passes for 117 yards with four touchdowns. His replacement, Omar Jacobs tossed four scores in the second half, including a 31-yard score on his first pass attempt.
  • Garcia went over the 50,000-career passing yardage mark in the game.
  • Seven different Shock players caught passes in the game.
  • The Sharks have beaten the Shock in the regular season finale in back-to-back season with both contests taking place in Jacksonville.

TAMPA BAY 57, SAN JOSE 44
  • Tampa Bay scored the game's first points and its last on defensive returns for scores. Michael Hawthorne scooped up a loose fumble after a botched snap and returned it 36 yards for a TD two minutes into the game. On the game's final play with the SaberCats down seven, San Jose QB Mark Grieb heaved a prayer towards the end zone (it worked against SJ last week) and Erick McIntosh leapt for the errant ball and ran weaved through SaberCats defenders for a 46-yard interception return as time expired.
  • Grieb set league records for passing yards on a season and interceptions thrown in the loss.
  • Tampa Bay started its fifth QB of the season (a franchise high). Local USF QB Matt Grothe got his first start and completed just 50% of his passes but most were for big gains against the bad San Jose pass coverage, including three scores of over 20 yards.
  • Storm rookie WR Amarri Jackson's first four catches went for touchdowns and he finished with six grabs for 116 yards with four TDs.
  • Over his last 11 games, Jackson has posted 110 catches for 1,346 yards with 31 touchdowns.
  • San Jose FB Chad Cook had 33 rushing yards on seven carries with a touchdown. He also had three receptions for 43 yards. Cook's 30 rushing scores on the season rank third all-time in league single-season history.
  • SaberCats WR James Roe became the 11th player in league history to amass 10,000 career receiving yards and finished with eight catches for 98 yards with three scores.
  • Storm DL Jermaine Smith posted two sacks in the game and the team set a league record for sacks in a season (40).
  • San Jose was 1-8 on the road this season and lost five games while leading in the final 30 seconds.

ORLANDO 62, NEW ORLEANS 44
  • New Orleans led early, but a 28-point second quarter put the game away for Orlando.
  • VooDoo WR/KR P.J. Berry set the league single-season record for all-purpose yardage and total kickoff returns during the game. He finished the game with 292 all-purpose yards and three scores.
  • Orlando WR Bobby Sippio had 14 catches for 166 yards with four scores in the game. He didn't have a catch for the game's final 22 minutes.
  • Predators DB Rayshaun Kizer set league records for interceptions (16) and interception return yards (237) in the win. In his first two AFL season, Kizer has recorded more interceptions (28) than any player in any two-year period in league history. His 28 picks already rank him 28th all-time in league history.
  • Kizer's teammate Kenny McEntyre seized his AFL record 96th career interception in his final AFL regular season game. FYI, in McEntyre's first two AFL season, he had seven interceptions.
  • Orlando QB Nick Hill tossed seven touchdowns and just eight incompletions in the game. He also ran for 38 yards and finished the season with 391 yards on the ground - the fifth most in league history (third most by a QB). Hill's 97 passing scores were fourth most in the league this season.
  • Orlando (16-95) had four times as many penalties in the win as New Orleans (4-18).
  • The Predators failed to convert any of its three third down conversion attempts.
  • Orlando had a season high attendance of 14,982 and was the only team to have at least 10,000 at every home game in 2011. The Predators led the league in attendance by nearly 2,000 more than the next closest team (Tampa Bay).

MILWAUKEE 54, CHICAGO 41
  • The Mustangs never trailed and led 30-6 midway through the second quarter thanks to two fumble recoveries for scores by Broderick Stewart.
  • Chicago was led once again by WR/KR Reggie Gray, who caught nine passes for 123 yards with five scores.
  • Gray set an AFL rookie record with 49 total receiving touchdowns in a season. The previous record was set by Arizona's Rod Windsor (47) last year in a 16-game schedule.
  • J.J. Raterink started under center for the Rush but after four sacks and an interception was benched for Dominic Randolph who tossed three score, but was picked off twice.
  • The Mustangs beat the Rush last season in the playoffs (when Milwaukee was called the Iron) before losing to eventual ArenaBowl champion Spokane in the National Conference championship game. This year, the Mustangs were 7-11.

TULSA 71, KANSAS CITY 55
  • The Talons never trailed and posted a season-high 31 first downs in the game.
  • Tulsa QB Justin Allgood completed 73.8% of his passes for 310 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. It was his first 300-yard passing game since Week One when he was the starter for the Philadelphia Soul.
  • Talons rookie WR Troy McBroom caught the game's first touchdown and finished the game with 12 catches for 142 yards.
  • In a losing effort, Kansas City averaged 16.2 yards per completion (Tulsa averaged 9.6).
  • Command QB Steve Wasil tossed three interceptions that lead to two Tulsa touchdowns.
  • Tulsa FB/LB Jamar Ransom ran for three touchdowns and had two solo tackles.
  • If you include the ten years that the Tulsa was a member of the af2, this season is the worst in its twelve years playing Arena Football rules football and first not making the playoffs. The eight wins are the lowest since the 9-7 inaugural af2 season of 2000.

GEORGIA 63, IOWA 59
  • Georgia scored with 25 seconds left to take a four-point lead (on second down) which gave the Barnstormers time to call four plays. Luckily for the Force, rookie WR Maurice Purify picked off a pass to preserve the win and secure the #3 spot in the American Conference playoffs.
  • Force FB/LB Benji McDowell scored the game-winning touchdown (his only rush of the game). Then defensively, he posted four sacks, a forced fumble and 6.5 stops.
  • Georgia QB Darnell Kennedy made his first AFL start and tossed for 373 yards with seven TDs and an interception. He also had a rushing touchdown.
  • Two Iowa receivers each caught 12 passes on the night. AFL TD king Jesse Schmidt had 170 yards and five scores on his dozen catches, while Marques Hamilton had 139 yards and a touchdown.
  • It was the tenth double-digit catch game for Schmidt. He's had at least two TD catches in each of his last 17 games (was shutout in first game of the season),
  • Georgia WR Maurice Purify, back after missing the past two games, caught six passes for 125 yards with three touchdowns and made the game-preserving interception as time expired.
  • The Barnstormers posted its highest attendance of the season and best since Week Four of last year in the loss. Iowa started the season 2-1, but finished it 3-12.
  • Georgia enters the playoffs winning four of its last six contests, including winning its last three road contests. This week, the Force travel to Cleveland - the last team to beat Georgia away from home.

ARIZONA 55, DALLAS 49
  • Arizona never trailed, though Dallas tied the game four times, en route to its ninth straight win and AFL regular season record 16th victory.
  • Rattlers QB Nick Davila tied the AFL record for most passing touchdowns in a single-season (117) after tossing eight of them to just nine incompletions.
  • Five of those scores went to WR Chris Jackson on just seven catches.
  • In a losing effort, Dallas WR Tiger Jones added 10 catches and 133 yards to end the season with the most catches and yards in the league. His 2,232 receiving yards and 171 receptions rank second all-time in league single-season history to Rod Windsor's unbelievable 2010 campaign.
  • Dallas FB Derrick Ross scored his team's first three touchdowns and finished the season with the second-most rushing scores in league history (39) and shattered the rushing yardage record by over 150 yards.
  • In fact, despite being a rookie, Ross ranks 30th all-time in career rushing yards in league history (tied for 26th all-time in rushing TDs). If Ross duplicated his exact 2011 season next year, he'd rank sixth all-time in rushing yards and seventh in rushing touchdowns.
  • Dallas enters the postseason with two straight losses and has lost to all three National Conference playoff opponents.
  • The Vigilantes posted drew a team-record 12,866 for the game and has had two straight games with over 10,000. None of Dallas' first 15 home games dating back to its inaugural season last year drew more than 9,876.

BREAKING IT DOWN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Benji McDowell, Georgia FB/LB
The league gave its Ironman of the Week this week to someone that according to its own definition of the term "Ironman" isn't eligible when Georgia FB/LB Benji McDowell posted one of the more memorable Ironman performances of the season. McDowell was a monster on defense (the league did honor him with Defensive Player of the Week) recording 6.5 tackles, a forced fumble and four sacks. Then when the Force needed a touchdown to win the game, he made the most of his lone rushing attempt of the night and barreled in from a yard out with 25 seconds left to win the game and secure the #3 seed in the American Conference playoffs for the Force.

2011 PLAYOFFS - 1st ROUND GAMES
Four of the eight teams have previously won ArenaBowls (Arizona, Chicago, Orlando and Spokane) including last year's champion (Spokane). All four of those teams made the playoffs last year as well as Jacksonville, which was the American Conference's top seed in 2010.

Arizona finished with the best record and has home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Cleveland is in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 when the Gladiators lost 70-35 in the National Conference championship game to eventual ArenaBowl champion Philadelphia. The Dallas Vigilantes, an expansion team in 2010, is making its first playoff appearance and made one of the greatest turnarounds in league history. Last year, Dallas was 3-13.

Though the league wants you to believe that this Georgia Force team is the same that Doug Plank guided to four straight playoff berths from 2005-08 with an ArenaBowl appearance, this team is in fact just the Alabama Vipers as evidences by a majority of its players also playing for the Vipers last year and its head coach. The same goes for you New Orleans - you're always be the long-winded Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings to me. As for the Vipers/Force franchise, this is its first AFL playoff appearance. The team won the 2008 ArenaCup as the Tennessee Valley Vipers in overtime over Spokane.

If either Chicago or Orlando advances to the ArenaBowl, either team will be the first (or possibly second if they play each other) to win a conference championship in each conference. As mentioned previously, conferences meant nothing until 2005 when the league made the ArenaBowl a neutral site game pitting the champion of each conference. That was the first year that an actual trophy was given out for each conference champion. Chicago won the American Conference in 2006 and played the National Conference champion Orlando Predators in ArenaBowl XX. When the AFL returned after missing the 2009 season, the league opted to forget its history and used the conference alignments of the af2 instead of the AFL and thus Chicago is now in the National and Orlando is in the American.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
Friday, July 29:      #4 Spokane (9-9) at #1 Arizona (16-2)
Friday, July 29:      #3 Dallas (11-7) at #2 Chicago (13-5)

AMERICAN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
Friday, July 29:      #4 Orlando (11-7) at #1 Jacksonville (14-4)
Sunday, July 31:    #3 Georgia (11-7) at #2 Cleveland (10-8)

Two of the four games feature rematches of last year's first-round games - both are the 1-4 matchups. In the National, Spokane and Arizona play in the postseason for the second time except the venue is in the desert not the Pacific Northwest. Last year, Spokane won 57-49 and eventual went on to win the ArenaBowl. Shock QB Kyle Rowley tossed seven scores and in a losing effort, Rattlers WR Rod Windsor had 15 catches for 210 yards with five touchdowns. Arizona enters the game with a league-best nine game winning streak and is the first team to post 16 wins in a single regular season. One of its two losses was to the Shock. In that game, the Rattlers scored with 11 seconds left and trailed by one. Instead of going for the tie and potentially overtime, Arizona went for and failed to convert a two-point conversion. The Rattlers got the ball back on an on-side kick, but the 46-yard field goal was blocked to give Spokane the one-point win.

In the American, Orlando is again playing in Jacksonville in the first round. Last year, the playoff team with the worst record in the tournament beat the Sharks 73-69 thanks to a 16-yard touchdown from Nick Hill to Bobby Sippio with eight seconds left. Sippio had six total touchdowns in the game (two rushing and four receiving). Jacksonville swept the Preds in the regular season, but the Sharks have dropped three of its last four games after posting a league same season record 13 straight wins.

As for the 2-3 matchups...

Cleveland has lost its last two contests but has won its past six home games including the June 11th 62-48 win over this week's opponent, Georgia. In that game, Force QB Brett Elliott tossed three interceptions and lost a fumble. Elliott suffered an injury in Week 19 at Tampa Bay and his replacement, Darnell Kennedy earned AFL Offensive Player of the Week honors this past weekend in his first career start. Kennedy, like Elliott, is prone to turning over the ball. In all six games Kennedy has appeared in, he's thrown at least one interception. Georgia has won four of its past five games since the loss at Cleveland, including road wins at Orlando, Tampa Bay and Iowa.

This is the matchup of the best two rookie head coaches in the league - Dallas' Clint Dolezel and Chicago's Bob McMillen. The Rush swept the regular season series and won the Central Division. Chicago enters the game winning four of its last five and eight of its last ten. The loss of starting QB Russ Michna has seemed to hurt Chicago. A late season trade with Kansas City brought J.J. Raterink back to the Windy City and he's thrown 16 TDs to just two interceptions in his four games with the team. Dallas has lost its last two, both of which were to the top two seeds in the National Conference. The Vigilantes have the best receiving-rushing tandem in the league in WR Tiger Jones and FB Derrick Ross. In the two games against the Rush both had outstanding numbers (Jones: 27 catches for 352 yards with four TDs/Ross: five rushing scores), however, the Vigilantes lost due to turnovers, missed field goals and poor play on third and fourth down.

Last year, the top two seeds in the National won (Spokane & Milwaukee) and the bottom two seeds in the American won (Tampa Bay & Orlando). I think the same thing will happen this year - Arizona & Chicago from the National and Georgia & Orlando from the American.

Then the Rattlers host the Predators in a rematch of ArenaBowl VII. The Rattlers won that 36-31 back in 1994. If so, it would be Arizona's sixth ArenaBowl appearance (first since losing three straight from 2002-04). Oddly enough, the Rattlers were the last team before the neutral site ArenaBowl to host an ArenaBowl game (lost 69-62 to San Jose in 2004). For the Predators, it would be the team's seven ArenaBowl appearance and first since losing to Chicago in 2006. Both team have won two ArenaBowl titles (Arizona: 1994, 1997/Orlando: 1998, 2000). It would also be the third time that Phoenix would be an ArenaBowl host city. The first was in 1997, then seven years late in 2004 and seven year later (this year).
