Celebrating the history of the Arena Football League

Notes from Kats Kamp

Short Circuit to Success
Anxious to move up to the next level in his football career, Corey Kelley laid out his plans carefully. Putting a map next to open tryout schedules for AFL and af2 teams, he plotted his route. He planned to “work the circuit” of tryouts in the southeast. Then he loaded up the car and he drove to Tennessee. His first stop was Nashville, where he impressed the Kats staff enough to become only the second player in team history to make the roster from open tryouts. “It sure saved me a lot in gas money,” jokes the versatile Texan. Already a threat as a receiver, rusher, and kick returner, he is quickly catching on at playing defense.

For Your Future Consideration
You read about one of your team’s players being traded for “future considerations” and wonder what that really means. I had always assumed it was the same as the infamous “player to be named later,” but in many cases that elusive player never seems to get named. I asked head coach Pat Sperduto to explain what we got in some of these mysterious trades. One of the more common “considerations” involves protecting roster spots. This year the Kats were able to protect one additional player in the expansion draft because of one of those trades. Trades to expansion teams may contain an “and we won’t select any of your players” clause.

Mrs. Jones
If you followed Nashville last year you probably remember that Tyronne Jones missed a few games near the end of the season to be in New Orleans with his wife who was having extreme difficulties with her pregnancy. If you’ve been wondering about her as I have, you’ll be glad to know that mother and baby are both fine. In fact, Kristine recovered in time to attend the Arena Bowl.
