Electrifying DB heads to BC Lions

SPOKANE, WA (May 27, 2014) – Shock defensive back Paul Stephens is taking the next step in his career, moving on to play with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Placed on other league exempt today by the Shock, the quick defensive back who is second in the AFL with 20 pass break ups, will leave for Canada immediately.

“He's [Paul] got the athleticism and speed to contend for a starting job with the BC Lions this season as a rookie,” former Shock General Manager and current Director of U.S. Scouting for the Lions Ryan Rigmaiden said. “He could definitely come into the CFL and be a difference maker in the secondary.”

Stephens led a Shock secondary that was one of the best in the AFL this season, recording 42.0 tackles, one interception, 20 pass break ups, and one fumble recovery in nine games.

In his three years in Spokane he totaled 161 tackles and 17 interceptions. 12 of his interceptions came in 2012 with, five of which came in one game, setting the AFL single-game record. He leaves the Shock only seven interceptions shy of the franchise career record currently held by Terrance Sanders.

“Going to the CFL is something Paul has had in his sights for a while,” Shock Head Coach Andy Olson said. “We’re excited for him, we really hope that he goes up there and does well and makes a name for himself. We wish Paul nothing but the best with the BC Lions.”

The Shock take on their Pacific Division rivals, the Portland Thunder, this Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for as low as $14 by visiting SpokaneShock.com.
