Shock take bite out of Sharks, Win 76-41

 Spokane defense forces six total turnovers in win over Jacksonville, extend win streak to four

SPOKANE, WA (June 8, 2013) – In front of a crowd of 8,463 the Spokane Shock (9-3, 3-1) win their fourth straight game defeating the Jacksonville Sharks (8-4, 3-0) 76-41.

Playing at home for the second week in a row the Spokane Shock would receive the opening kickoff and need only two plays to score when QB Erik Meyer would find Kamar Jorden on the comeback route. Jorden would break a tackle and take it in for the 21-yard touchdown giving the Shock the 7-0 lead. On Jacksonville’s first possession QB Bernard Morris would throw an interception to Shock DB Ruschard Dodd-Masters. The Shock would score in two plays again as Meyer and Jorden connected for the second time of the game giving them a 14-0 lead. Each team would score one more time before Shark QB Morris would throw another interception, this time to Terrance Sanders, who would return it 39-yards for the touchdown giving the Shock a 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jacksonville would start the second quarter receiving the kickoff after the pick six by Sanders. The Sharks would go the length of the field and score on a 7-yard pass from Morris to Philpart. Not to be outdone, the Shock would also drive the length of the field capped off by a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Brandon Tompkins giving the Shock a 35-14 lead. After a combined four turnovers in the quarter the Shock would capitalize off the fumble recovery by Beau Bell when Erik Meyer would scramble and find Tompkins in the end zone for the 13-yard touchdown. On the last defensive stop of the half the Shock would force the Sharks to go four-and-out and finish off the half with one more touchdown from Meyer to Tennell for the 2-yard touchdown pass. The Shock would score their second most points in the first half of the season, 49, and go into halftime leading Jacksonville by 35 points.

Both teams would open the second half with 45-yard scoring drives making the score 56-21 Spokane. On Jacksonville’s next possession new QB R.J. Archer would connect with Jeron Harvey on the corner route who would make the jumping catch and go over the boards in the end zone for the 23-yard touchdown and Cutters Catch of the Game. Spokane would score one more time along with Sanders having another interception giving them a 63-27 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Spokane would keep possession going into the last quarter of play and score right away on the short quarterback keep by Arvell Nelson. Jacksonville would score twice, the second coming after a Spokane fumble on the Shark’s 3-yard line making the score 69-41 Spokane. The Shock would score one more time to take the lead back to 5 touchdowns making the final score 76-41. Spokane’s offensive line came up huge allowing no sacks to the number one ranked pass rushing defense in the AFL going into week 12.

Shock quarterback Erik Meyer completed 15 of 21 passes for 218 yards and 6 touchdowns. Adron Tennell had 8 receptions for 84 yards and 3 touchdowns. To go along with a total of six defensive stops, Terrance Sanders had two interceptions for 53-yards, returning one for a 39-yard touchdown.

Bernard Morris completed 16 of 25 attempts for 170 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Jeron Harvey led the Shark receivers with 7 receptions for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jacksonville’s Terrance Smith had 8 kickoff returns for 148 yards.

Next week, the Shock will travel to Arizona to take on the Rattlers at U.S. Airways Arena in Phoenix, AZ for a huge West Division matchup. Kickoff is set for Saturday June, 15th at 6:00 PM PST.
