San Jose Ends Season With 73-46 Over Gladiators
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (June 16, 2007) - Matt Kinsinger scored three rushing touchdowns and Rodney Wright added a pair of kickoff return scores leading the San Jose SaberCats to their 10th straight win and the top seed in the American Conference playoffs with a 73-46 win over the Las Vegas Gladiators Monday afternoon.
Clevan Thomas opened the scoring for San Jose (13-3) when he returned his ninth interception of the season 30 yards for a score.
Following a 1-yard Brian Jones touchdown run that tied the score at 7-7, San Jose QB Mark Grieb tossed his 100th scoring pass of the season, a 24-yard strike to James Roe for a 14-7 lead. It was the only scoring pass of the game for Grieb, who completed 9-of-13 attempts for 119 yards playing just the first half.
Kinsinger scored on a pair of short runs, Steve Watson recovered a Jones fumble in the endzone for a score and A.J. Haglund connected on a 36 yard field goal giving San Jose a 38-10 lead at the close of the first half.
San Jose scored 21 points and increased its lead to 59-17 before the offense took the field in the second half. Wright returned the opening kickoff of the half 57 yards and scampered 56 yards following a Thabiti Davis scoring catch.
Cleannord Saintil scooped up a fumble and went 34 yards for a score giving San Jose its largest lead in the game before the offense even took the field.
Craig Whelihan played the second half for San Jose and completed 7-of-12 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.
The SaberCats will host a Divisional Round playoff game on Saturday, July 7 and will host the American Conference championship game on July 14 should they advance.
