Scrimmage Rekindles “War on I-4”

The Orlando Predators and Tampa Bay Storm took to the field on Sunday for their first live scrimmage of training camp. It wasn’t your typical scrimmage with both teams warming up on opposite sides of the field. No, things started out with a bang during the offensive line versus defensive line drills. There was definitely no love lost between Tampa Bay’s Nyle Wiren and his nemesis, Orlando, as he got into a scrum in the opening drills with a Predator.

Most of the questions floating around the Preds this season revolve around new starting quarterback Joe Hamilton. Overall, he had a good showing, as he hit two early touchdown passes, one each to rookie Anthony Bright and seven-year wide receiver/linebacker Cory Fleming. The highlight of Hamilton’s performance came on his first drive, when he drove the Preds 45 yards in three plays, connecting with Bright on a 17-yard touchdown pass.

The Preds also got a good look at some other new talent, including former UCF Golden Knight Paul Miranda, who intercepted Storm quarterback Pat O’Hara and returned it for a long touchdown.

Preds veteran defensive specialist Kenny McEntyre did not dress for the scrimmage in order to allow the coaches to get a good look at the players competing for the other defensive specialist position alongside McEntyre.

The scrimmage also had its comical moments, including an option play called by Jay Gruden. The only problem with call was the quarterback was not allowed to run the football in this scrimmage. Predators third-string quarterback Chris Sanders ran 15 yards during the play for the touchdown that almost counted. After a hilarious discussion between Storm head coach Tim Marcum, the officials, and Gruden, it was decided to bring the play back to the 15-yard line and just give the Preds a first down.

Final score? Storm 50, Predators 33.
