At a press conference today, the Grand Rapids Rampage introduced their new head coach and director of football operations, Bob Cortese. Cortese, 61, signed a two-year contract with the team. He has over 30 years of coaching experience, the last six in the Arena League and af2. He was the head coach of the Oklahoma Wranglers from 2000-2001. He was also an assistant coach with the Portland Forest Dragons in 1998 and1999 and spent most of the last two seasons with the Wichita Stealth of the af2.

“I’m excited to be here,” said Cortese. “I’ve coached or played football every year since I was eight years old. I’ve never had a year off. I have a tough act to follow in coach (Michael) Trigg. I’m known as a builder of programs. This is an unusual job for me. I don’t think this program needs to be rebuilt. I think it needs to be maintained and hopefully I can bring it back to the level it was back in 2001.”

Cortese recalled a couple of times during the Rampage’s championship season of 2001 when he came to Grand Rapids and witnessed the fan’s support for the team. The first time was when his Wranglers lost to Grand Rapids 72-70 at the Van Andel on a last-second field goal. “The place went crazy. I stayed on the field and looked around and thought, ‘this is what it’s all about. This is why people coach.’”

He returned to Grand Rapids a few weeks later for Arena Bowl XV as the color commentator for the national radio broadcast of the game. He talked about the scene in the Van Andel Arena after the hometown Rampage won the game. “I remember the confetti coming down and I remember the fans and I said, ‘that’s my dream.’”

“When it all came down to it, it’s all about finding the right guy at the right place at the right time,” said team President and CEO Dan DeVos. “When all those factors come together, then that’s the guy you go with. With his ability to make a team work and to understand the game, it’s the logical choice for the Rampage at this place and this time. We know that he has the ability and he clearly has the desire to make it all work.”

Cortese said he wants to get his coaching staff assembled as soon as possible and has already talked to Sparky McEwen on the phone. McEwen has been the Rampage offensive coordinator since 2001 and was also one of the four finalists for the head coaching position.

The hiring of Cortese was a bit of a surprise. Many believed that Sparky McEwen was the logical successor to former head coach Michael Trigg, who resigned on August 6.
