Storm traing camp - Day 11

Wednesday February 29, 2012

Players keeping focused, spotlight on Eric Ortiz

TAMPA BAY – As we get closer to that start of 2012 season, the coaching staff treated today’s training camp as if it was the first practice of the season.

The team reviewed film of last night’s scrimmage with the Orlando Predators, and spent most of the day working on correcting mistakes that were made.  “Last night was a big evaluation night,” said head coach Dave Ewart.  “We’re just looking to get better each and every day.

The players also realize the importance of the next few sessions.  With the finish of training camp at the end of the week, the players are looking to do everything they can to make the final roster, one of which is body maintenance.  “We’re all looking to stay health, and work on our bodies” said offensive lineman Darius Savage.

Coaches Perspective:  The Storm opens its season in Chicago, Saturday, March 10 at Allstate Arena.  “We have a real game in 10 days, last night was just a scrimmage,” said Ewart.  “Let’s take this time to iron things out.”

Quote of the day:  “We’re doing the extra things,” said center Brad Serini.  “Watching extra film and staying after for extra running will hopefully pay off.”

Looking Forward:  With only four practices remaining over the next two days, and Friday’s roster cut-down looming, the players have limited time to show what they are made of.  “The AFL is a league of versatility,” said offensive and defensive lineman Wondell Rutledge.  “I’m looking to show I can do multiple things, and play multiple positions.”

Player Spotlight:  Due to small roster sizes in Arena Football it is important for every team to have players with the ability to play on both sides of the ball.  One of those players is the Storm’s Eric Ortiz, who for the past two seasons has played the linebacker position on defense and the full back position in short yardage situations on offense.  In his 2011 campaign, Ortiz recorded 14.5 tackles and a forced fumble on defense; while in ArenaBowl XXIII, he recorded three touchdowns on the ground.

Ticket Sales:  Single game tickets are now available for purchase.  Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com, by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000, or by visiting the McDonalds Ticket Office at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
