Shock 7-0 After Win Over Tri-Cities Fever

WR Raul “the thrill” Vijil started the game with a 41-yard kick return.  Two plays later, QB Nick Davila connected with LB Lee Foliaki for a 2-yard touchdown reception. Just like that; the Shock were already on the board.

Shock kicker Brian Jackson then kicked to the Fever right into the net; a 50-yard field goal.  Too bad that didn't count as a score.  However, it prevented the Fever from getting very far, as they began their drive at the 5-yard line. Jackson nailed every extra point kick and a field goal in the fourth quarter.

The Shock defense fought hard, but was unable to prevent a Fever score by WR J.R. Thomas.  Thomas then threw the ball into the crowd as a souvenir game ball.  However, the 9th man doesn't play that way, J.R.  The ball was quickly thrown back out on the field.

WR Kelvin Dickens made an amazing reception that aided greatly in the next touchdown for the Shock, a 6-yard reception from Davila to OL Palauni Ma Sun.  However, Dickens was injured during the play, which caused him to leave the game.  He did come back to play, but it was evident that he was not at 100%.

The Fever then attempted to trick the Shock with an onside kick.  However, that play backfired when Shock's WR Patrick Bugg came up with the ball, turning the ball back over to the Shock.  Davila and Vijil then lead the team to another touchdown, this time an amazing 21-yard reception that Vijil literally had to dive for to secure.

Midway through the second quarter, Davila connected with WR Andy Olson, who ran the ball in from the 18-yard line for a touchdown.  Like last week's game, Olson's desire to score one for the team succeeded in a touchdown.  There is a receiver in another league known for getting tough yards after the catch.  On that play and one in the second half, Spokane's A.O. looked every bit the shorter, paler younger image of T.O.

Fever's WR Emery Beckles had an amazing 42-yard kick return that would have set up the Fever for a touchdown had Shock's kicker Brian Jackson not stopped him.  Beckles' hard work was for nothing though as a penalty against the Fever was called that put them back to the 4-yard line.  However, Fever's QB Tali Ena connected with WR J.R. Thomas for a 31-yard touchdown reception, narrowing the Shock's lead to just one touchdown.

During the next drive, Davila connected with Vijil for a 5-yard touchdown reception for the Shock..  Unfortunately, the Shock tried the same onside kick deal as the Fever did earlier in the game.  The play also failed for the Shock, putting the ball back into the hands of the Fever.  One play later, the Fever scored again.

Spokane definitely shocked the Fever with their touchdown in the last seconds of the second quarter.  Davila and WR Tremaine Tyler are to thank for a trick play that left the Fever scratching their heads.  The Fever attempted to end the half with a field goal, but the play was unsuccessful. Shock ended the first half 42–28 over the Fever.

The Fever came into the third quarter with a quick trip down the field and score.  No worries though as Shock scored each possession thus far and continued to do so with the next play.  Davila threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Olson (his 2nd of the game and 9th of the season).  At the end of the third quarter, Davila had completed 18 of the 19 passes thrown.  With that completion percentage, I wonder if he will still have to earn his place in the starting line up for next week's game.

Vijil caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Davila early in the fourth quarter, his third touchdown of the game. Also in the fourth quarter, Vijil was able to return Fever's attempted pooch kick for major yardage. You can always tell who is your team's MVP by listening to the smack talk of your opponent.

The Fever defense and offense really came alive in the fourth quarter and managed to close the gap to just three points and turn the last few minutes of the game into another nail-bitter.  Thankfully, the Shock's defense would not allow another score and the Shock had possession the last minute of the game and managed to milk the clock for the win.  Another close game between the interstate rivals.
