AFLWA Player of the Week (Week 2): Danny Wimprine, New Orleans VooDoo
Tuesday March 11, 2008
It didn’t take long for Danny Wimprine to make his presence felt in the AFL.
In his first start, he led the VooDoo to a 54-53 win against Southern Division-rival Orlando, completing 27 of 37 passes for 311 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. With the effort, he was named the Player of the Week by the Arena Football League Writers Association.
Trailing 47-41 with 12 minutes remaining, Wimprine led New Orleans on a five-play scoring drive, which was culminated on a 2-yard pass to James Jordan. Wimprine threw three of his touchdown passes in the second quarter to give the VooDoo a 34-27 lead at halftime.
The second-year player from Memphis was in the lineup because of an injury to regular starter Steve Bellisari. Wimprine, who is a native New Orleanian, now is third overall among AFL quarterbacks with a 126.5 passer rating.
It is uncertain whether Bellisari will get another opportunity to start this week when the VooDoo (1-1) takes another Southern Division foe, this time against undefeated Tampa Bay (2-0) on Sunday at the New Orleans Arena.
