Knights send Gluski to Cape Fear

Even the best fables force the hero to face a surprise or two. Mike Gluski’s tale is no exception. After being benched in the fourth quarter of the Knights win over Carolina last weekend; Mike Gluski was traded Wednesday to the Cape Fear Wildcats for future considerations.
Gluski is rejoining Chris Siegfried who was his offensive coordinator last season in Macon. Siegfried is head coach of the expansion Wildcats. Last week Cape Fear announced that backup quarterback Gary Smeck had chosen to leave the team. Gluski will, in all likelihood, be the backup for Wildcat starting quarterback Vic Penn who has led the ‘cats to a 2-1 start and came within four seconds of matching Gluski’s 3-0 start in Macon.
The bigger questions seem to surround who will be under center for the Knights as they host AF2 power Tennessee Valley this weekend. Renotto Solomon was ineffective in relief of Gluski in his first appearance last weekend. However, at Fort Valley State Solomon was known for his powerful arm and last second heroics. Perhaps Knights’ head coach Kevin Porter hopes for the same from Solomon as a Knight. The Knights today were assigned quarterback John Rayborn, a 6’ 2” 220 pounder who spent time in 2000 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League after his college career at the University of Texas El Paso. However, it seems unlikely that Rayborn would be ready to start by Saturday.
Even though player turnover is an anticipated part of professional sport, it will certainly take some time to get used to a Knights’ backfield without number two at the helm.
