Five-year vet led the franchise to first-ever ArenaBowl appearance in first year with club

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Destroyers presented by Germain have signed quarterback Matt Nagy to a two-year contract extension, Head Coach Doug Kay announced today.  Per club terms, details of the contract were not disclosed.

Nagy (6-2, 220, Delaware) will enter his second season with the Destroyers and sixth in the AFL in 2008.  In 2007, he completed 341-of-545 passes for 3,775 yards and 75 touchdowns, setting single-season Destroyers record for completions, attempts and touchdown passes.  After finishing the regular season with a 7-9 record, Nagy led the Destroyers to three upset victories over the National Conference’s top-seeded teams (Tampa Bay, Dallas and Georgia) and the franchise’s first-ever berth in the ArenaBowl.

“Matt (Nagy) is an instrumental part of our team and our plans,” Kay said.  “We are happy to have him with us for the next two years to engineer our championship goals.  In one-year he has shown great leadership skills and that he is the pulse of our football team.”

As a starter, he has garnered an overall record of 28-24 during his AFL career, including a 6-3 mark in the playoffs. Before setting franchise marks in passing yards (7,268), completions (632) and touchdowns (151) with the Georgia Force in 2005-06, Nagy spent the 2004 season with the Carolina Cobras and began his AFL career with the New York Dragons in 2002.

After prepping at Manheim Central (PA) High School, Nagy set over 20 career passing records at the University of Delaware from 1997-2000. Among those records are attempts (895), completions (502), yards (8,214) and touchdowns (58). He joins a long list of Delaware graduates who have spent time as a signal caller in professional football: Scott Brunner (NY Giants), Jeff Komlo (Detroit Lions), Rich Gannon (Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders).
