Vipers beat Green Bay 26-21

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – It was a trying Friday night for the Tennessee Valley Vipers against Green Bay, but everything worked out in the end.
The Vipers got a late 2-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tony Colston, a last-minute 29-yard field goal from Steven Lee and some clutch defense on their way to a 26-21 victory before 4,365 fans at the Von Braun Center.
“We still have some problems on offense, but the defense won this game,’’ said Vipers coach Milt Theodosatos, whose team improved to 3-2 and visits Cincinnati next weekend.
“The guys in the secondary were magnificent.”
Green Bay (2-3) led 14-0 in the second period following a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs by Gustavus Tyson before the Vipers answered on backup quarterback Chris Gunn’s 4-yard pass to Lewis Howes. Lee’s kick missed and the Vipers trailed 14-6 with 3:47 to go in the opening half.
Howes would catch a 33-yard pass and John Cousins added a two-point run to tie the game early in the third quarter before Lee’s 27-yard field goal made it 17-14 game with 8:03 left in the fourth.
Following Colston’s late run, the Blizzard pulled within five points on Nick Giordano’s 14-yard pass from Zeke Dixon and Bob Forstrom kick with 49 seconds left in regulation.
After Lee’s field goal, Vipers defensive back Carlos Campbell ended Green Bay’s final drive with an interception at the Tennessee Valley 6.
“We played great on defense and the offense did its part,’’ Campbell said. “We made the stops.
