Jefferson Steps into the Arena

The upcoming season has seen many changes in the New Jersey Gladiators lineup. A lesser-known addition, LB/WR Fontez Jefferson, is fresh off a banner season in the National Indoor Football League and is looking forward to his foray in the Arena Football League.

The situation that he faces is a collection of new talent in all positions that should bring out the best in each player. The coaching staff will have open eyes on their new receivers and if Jefferson can duplicate the numbers he produced last year, then this could be the next step in his aspiration to someday play in the National Football League.

Jefferson was unable to find suitable playing time when he transferred from Cerritos Junior College in Norwalk, CA as a free safety to Montana State. His playing time was insufficient and did not start until a rash of injuries on the team lead him being a wide receiver during the few weeks of the season. Jefferson felt that Montana State Assistant coach Graig Salo opted to use his son, Steve, as starting safety, leaving Jefferson somewhat miffed.

"Everyone knew I played and hit harder," Jefferson said. "It was all politics" His chance to finally start was not at his natural position, but he was able to make the most of his time hauling in 9-receptions for 206-yards and 1-touchdown in three college starts during the 1999 season.

Jefferson was able to find all the playing time he wanted during his first professional season with the Billings Outlaws. "They didn`t hold me back from my abilities as an athlete," said Jefferson. He led the NIFL with 25-touchdowns on 95-receptions for 950-yards and earned 2nd Team All-NIFL for Billings. His one-year experience was enjoyable and it was the first time he was able to exhibit his effectiveness as a starter and receiver. "We were bussed everywhere, did not have big budgets, but it was really fun playing in the league."

His breakout year with Billings caught the attention of Gladiators officials through tape highlights and a contract for 2002. "We had ex-Arena League players in the league (NIFL) and the level of competition was good, but this upcoming season will be a challenge, " said a confidant Jefferson, who has never been to New Jersey, but the West Coast native will not be intimidated of the East Coast.

"I like the situation that I`m going into. I consider myself open-minded and can get along with most people", said Jefferson.

The opportunity to join a team that looks to have a promising year is ideal for the first-year Arena Football player. The Gladiators look to improve from a 2-12 record last season and Jefferson sees the team`s improvement critical of moving to the next level, the NFL "For me to go to the next level, we have to have more success as a team."
