Gladiator QB Situation Up in the Air

Now that last year`s starter, Connell Maynor, is not coming back for a second season, the New Jersey Gladiators will have to appoint a new starter at the quarterback position. So far they have a good arsenal of quarterbacks in line for the 2002 season. The recent acquisitions of Glenn Foley and Jay McDonagh, along with Todd Bankhead will create an interesting scenario for the number one spot on the team.

"We have three good quarterbacks and they all have something to prove," said head coach Frank Haege. "There is nobody right now who has the starting position."

McDonagh served under Haege in Quad City last year, leading them to an Arena Cup title. He tossed 73 touchdowns and threw for 3,822 yards; posting a 131.90 QB rating.

Bankhead served as backup to Maynor last season and saw limited action, finishing with 594 yards and 8 touchdowns. He will be in his second season with the team.

Foley, the ex-New York Jet, will return to the Meadowlands. The Cherry Hill, NJ native likes the fact that he is back home. "I’ve been in New Jersey my whole life and wanted to play in the Meadowlands," said Foley. He last played with the Seattle Seahawks where he passed for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns in three games.

The Gladiators will have three men competing for the number one position—it’s anyone`s guess who will come up on top. Bankhead has one year of experience in the Arena League and his size and arm are well suited for the game, McDonagh brings an impressive resume from Af2, and Foley brings his NFL experience indoors.

"All you want is a chance to compete," said Foley about the opportunity of beginning his first year in Arena Football. "It`s a wide-open game, receivers are a key, and the game suits my style of a quick release.”
