A Lesson in Transportation: The Road Trip

Anybody who has ever participated in athletics has also participated in one of sport`s great rituals, "The Road Trip." The road trip can really turn a team into a family.

There are two kinds of trips -- by plane and by bus. We (Chicago Rush) travel to Detroit, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, and Indianapolis by bus and all of the rest of our away game are by plane. Sure, everyone likes the idea of plane trips because they sound fast and luxurious, but in all reality, the bus trips are much simpler, sometimes faster, and a lot more interesting. On plane trips, everybody sleeps and nobody is comfortable. Sure, a bus is not the most comfortable place on earth, but most people get their own double seats. Of course, you can guess who does not get their own. That`s right, the rookies.

On the road trip, you hear some of the most outrageous stories known to mankind. Ninety-nine percent of these stories do not contain one bit of factual information. But, that is the challenge. Who can make the biggest, funniest, crudest story and still make it believable. Sometimes, you will hear a great story about someone on the team. This is not just any regular, boring story! This is a deep, dirty, secret about someone`s past. THAT IS ALL I CAN TELL YOU! I do not want to disclose any names or anyone`s credibility, not even Tony Henderson.

Probably more important than the stories are sleeping arrangements. Some sleep sitting straight up, some sleep leaning against one another. Trust me, the big guys always win when it comes to seating and sleeping arrangements on bus trips. Think about it, if you were the last person to get on the bus, would you rather sit with "slim" Dameon Porter with all that arm room? Or would you rather sit with me and have to put up with all of my food crumbs and my "big-boned" frame? Oh, and did I mention I snore? Loud.

That`s right, no matter what sport, or what age, Big People Rule!

Thanks for taking five minutes out of your day to drop in on my world. I feel my job depends on you, the fans, and therefore, you should know what goes on behind the scenes. I am always open to topic suggestions, so if anyone wants to know anything specific, please drop me an email. You can reply up there on top. Yeah, by my name. Well, anyway, hope to catch you all next week!
