With the post season kicking off tonight in San Jose, the announcing of the yearly AFL awards is right around the corner. While everyone wants to win a championship, recognition for players in the AFL is a big deal, and is an important part of each season. In the first of four articles, I’ll go over my first team All-Arena selections on offense.
QB- Dan Raudabaugh Philadelphia Soul
411-620, 4,992 yards, 119 TD’s, 12 INT’s
Really shouldn’t be any questions here. Raudabaugh has played better than he ever has in his career this year. He’s lead the Soul to a 15-3 record, and could be on his way to a third ArenaBowl. Raudabaugh will get his first All-Arena award this season.
FB- Derrick Ross Jacksonville Sharks
148 Rushes, 576 Yards, 33 TD’s
Another easy pick, Ross is the best fullback in league history, and has virtually every rushing record in league history. This wont go down as one of Ross’s best seasons, but this still is a
lock for the All-Arena voters. This will be Ross’s fifth All-Arena selection.
WR- Reggie Gray San Jose Sabercats
162 Receptions, 1,698 Yards, 44 TD’s
Big play Reggie Gray was at it again this year, leading the league in receptions, and being tied for most touchdowns. Gray was San Jose quarterback Erik Meyer’s favorite target this year, and showed his speed off on a weekly basis. This will be Gray’s fourth All-Arena Selection.
WR- Tiger Jones Jacksonville Sharks
148 Receptions, 2,101 Yards, 38 TD’s
In his first season away from Clint Dolezel since 2010, Tiger Jones continued his absolute excellence in Jacksonville, leading the league in receiving yards. This is Tiger’s fourth season with 2,000 plus yards, and a nice bounce back from last season with Philly. Like Ross, this won’t go down as Tiger’s best season ever, but it still was a very solid year for the future Hall-Of-Famer.
This will be Tiger’s fifth All-Arena Selection.
WR- Donovan Morgan LA KISS
132 Receptions, 2,074 Yards, 44 TD’s
Offensively, Donovan Morgan was the only positive thing for the LA KISS this season. With a mediocre offensive line, and quarterback Adrian Mcpherson leaving for the CFL after being hurt for weeks, not much was going right for LA. But Morgan once again showed just how important he is to KISS by being right near the top for every receiving category this year. He was tied for the league lead in touchdowns, and came in second for receiving yards. This will be Morgan’s fourth All-Arena selection.
OL- Adam Smith Philadelphia Soul
14 Receptions, 114 Yards, 9 TD’s
It’s not often a tight end can contribute to an offense like Adam Smith did for the Soul this season. Smith’s nine touchdowns were the most among all the AFL’s tight ends. Smith did a great job up front as well, helping keep quarterback Dan Raudabaugh upright all season. This will be Smith’s first time on the All-Arena list.
OL-Shannon Breen Philadelphia Soul
Philadelphia Soul OL allowed 10 Sacks
Breen has dominated the middle this year and is clearly an All-Arena lineman. Breen helped lead the Philadelphia Soul to the second least amount of sacks in the league. Breen will get his second ever All-Arena award, and his first ever First team All-Arena award.
OL- Rich Ranglin San Jose Sabercats
10 Receptions, 132 Yards, 6 TD’s
The defending offensive lineman of the year was a bright spot on a San Jose offensive line that struggled this year. While the team had its best season in franchise history, the line never fully played the way it needed to play. Ranglin did however, and was a solid part of the receiving game as well. This will be Ranglin’s fifth All-Arena selection.
