A Victory in Pink

On Saturday the Corpus Christi Sharks defeated the Texas Copperheads 44-30. The win wasn’t the only victory of the night as the Sharks donned special pink jerseys for this special ladies’ night game. This ladies’ night was a night of awareness, fundraising and victories.

The honor of the coin toss was given to a breast cancer survivor. Later in the evening, a special ladies’ night  package (roses, a massage, and dinner) were given to a woman currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  The jerseys that the Sharks wore were a variation of their normal jerseys. The names and numbers were in pink. A pink ribbon with a pink shark and wave created the sleeves. The Lady Sharks even donned pink for the evening. Corpus Christ also had special footballs for the night. In place of the white laces were pink. The jerseys were auctioned off at the end of the evening with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen foundation and First Friday.

The game was intense, full of nail biting action and anticipation. An early score by the Copperheads made for a bitter sweet opening quarter. The Sharks it seemed may have been cursed by the pink, instead of feeling its power.

In the first half, the team didn’t seem to be playing the same caliber game they’d shown they were capable of in previous games.  The game was tied 13-13 at the half. A dramatically different and excited Sharks squad emerged from the locker room.

The second have belonged to the powerful defense of the Sharks. Each kick off the Copperheads were held at the 2 yard line. Quarterback Fran Johnson, making his first appearance on the field since his knee injury in the season opener, completed 15 of 29 passes. And Ivory McCann once again was explosive on the field. He came up with two of the three Shark interceptions of the night. With just :23 left to play, McCann intercepted for the second time in the evening and ran back 31 yards for the game clinching touch down.

The Sharks (3-3) will travel to Albany, Georgia to take on the South Georgia Wildcats on Saturday night before returning home to face the Daytona Beach Thunderbirds on May 24.
