Pre-game: Arriving at 3:30 p.m. and getting set up for the tailgating took a short time. The grill was hot and about ten fans gathered to eat, drink and have a good time. With hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and chips the food was great and the football was fun.
The Boy Scout leader asked us to park on the side next time, but later told us that us parking there brought attention to his lot, so we have to park there in that spot from now on! We passed out tickets and started heading inside.
Game review: It didn’t take long for the Alabama Steeldogs to give their fans something to cheer about. On the opening kick off, a surprise onside kick was recovered by the Steeldogs. After a seven play drive, Robert Kent took a quarterback bootleg to the end zone.
However, Tennessee Valley answered quickly as Travis Blanchard took the ensuing kick off to pay dirt. Steven Lee missed his first of five extra points, but it wouldn’t stop the Vipers as they reeled off 19 unanswered points for a 19-7 lead.
The Steeldogs cut the lead to 19-14, but that would be as close as they would come.
Vipers quarterback Tony Colston found Henry Freeman for a touchdown, then found the end zone himself on a scramble, all before finding John Bradley from four yards out on fourth and goal.
Mitch Tanney relieved Kent during the fourth quarter and got the Steeldogs on the board with a four-yard pass to Ronald Dillon, cutting the lead to 38-20.
But the Vipers stretched the lead back out with a John Howes touchdown reception.
Jhun Cook ended the scoring in the final minute with a catch from Tanney.
Tanney finished the night 7-of-10 for 75 yards. Kent was 14-for-34 and two interceptions.
Colston was named offensive player of the game for his efforts. He ended his first start 13-of-22 for 104 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for one.
The Steeldogs will be off next week, and will return to action at the BJCC on Apr. 12 as the South Georgia Wildcats come to town.
