Celebrating the history of the Arena Football League

Oklahoma is Hogging all the Receivers

Ever since last season ended, Oklahoma Wranglers head coach Bob Cortese has been collecting wide-receivers. And like a riverboat gambler holding five aces, he’s got more than he needs. Many of the other teams in the league are now waiting to see which cards he’s going to play.

Of course it’s a great problem to have. Cortese is expecting a tremendously competitive camp where only the quickest feet and surest hands will survive.

Jeff Loots, who played some quarterback for the Wranglers last year and is projected as a starter this year for Chicago, recently called one of his former teammates in Oklahoma City.

“You guys are hogging all the receivers,” Loots said.

Chicago, and many other teams in the Arena Football League, will be waiting for Cortese to start cutting down his roster. No doubt, they’d like to look at some of the Wrangler castoffs before making any final roster decisions.

Here’s the skinny on some of the Wrangler receivers expected at camp:

Kusanti Abdul-Salaam -Returning starter

Rico Cannon -Former Oakland Raider

Wes Caswell -Former TU star has a year of arena ball under his belt

Antonio Chandler -Backup a year ago, very versatile

Lamont Cooper -Returned seven kickoffs for touchdowns last year in Milwaukee

Bobby McGowens is just another name on the Wranglers` long list of outstanding receivers.

Shawn Foreman -Twice All Big-East at West Virginia

Jarrail Jackson -Former Sooner played in AF2 last year

Carlos Johnson -Returning starter, led AFL in receptions

Bobby McGowens -Returning starter, once AFL player of the week

Melvin Phillips -Returning starter, scored 12 touchdowns last year

And this is not a complete list.
