Firecats Hold Off Knights

The emotionally weary Florida Firecats held off a late charge by the Macon Knights to pick up their third win in a row and their sixth win of the season, 41 – 29. Firecat lineman, Dunstan Anderson, was killed Monday in an automobile accident. Firecat head coach, Ben Bennett, said that this week was very emotional for his team, “Very difficult on a lot of levels. I was glad to see our guys could fight through it the way that they did. . . . This is my first experience with something like this in football. I didn’t know how I was going to react; much less my team.”

Bennet’s Firecats reacted by playing just well enough to keep the Knights at arm’s length. “We made mistakes and hurt ourselves, but we made some good plays as well. A win of any shape or size . . . I’ll take it. . . . We had the opportunity to do some great things, but give Macon credit. They came out and they played hard the whole time.”

Macon’s offense continued to sputter. Quarterback Tim Olmstead completed only nine of 33 passing attempts. However, four of those nine receptions went for touchdowns and he totaled 209 yards passing. The offensive struggles were most evident on third downs as the Knights failed to convert on any of their eight third down attempts. Knights’ head coach Mike Hold says that the answer is clear, “We’ve just got to be better on offense. Until I watch the film I don’t want to make any harsh comments, but we’ve got to better on offense.”

Hold gave his quarterback, Olmstead, mixed reviews, “He made some good throws. But I don’t think we took what they gave us all the time. We tried to force throws sometimes, and not coming down off your reads, and things like that. Sometimes we’ve just got to make the throws and he made some good ones. But he’s got to make them all.”

The one bright spot for the Knights was the play of the defense. “Florida’s a good offensive team and we knew it. I thought we did a good job on them defensively,” Hold said. The Macon defenders picked off Florida quarterback, Ken Mastrole, twice and batted down numerous other pass attempts.

With the win, Florida runs their record to 6 – 3. With the loss, Macon falls to 2 – 7. The Knights host Tennessee Valley this coming Saturday.
