Injuries, Losses Mount in Detroit

I wasn’t at Fury practice five minutes on Wednesday before the Fury lost yet another player. Lineman Matt Norwood injured his groin, and may be lost for the season. He will fit right in on the sideline for the Fury, however. This week, when Detroit faces the Arizona Rattlers on Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills, they will be without (I take a deep breath…), Matt Norwood, Ron Carpenter, Jerry Krafts, Billy Dicken, and Dawan Moss. Pardon the pun, but this isn’t what the doctor ordered for the Fury as they host an Arizona squad that has won six straight contests.

Rattlers quarterback Sherdrick Bonner is coming off of a smoking hot seven-touchdown, 238-yard performance against the league leading San Jose SaberCats. Arizona scored 35 unanswered points in the contest, and Bonner was named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week. The Rattlers find themselves at 9-5 and in prime position to snap up a home playoff game.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Detroit Fury. The Fury are 4-9 and going nowhere fast. Detroit hopes that they can play spoiler down the stretch as they host playoff bound teams Arizona and Colorado in the next two weeks.

“It’s tough to wake up in the morning, but if you don’t like it, you need to go out and find a new profession,” said Fury coach Tom Luginbill. “It’s especially hard on me because, not only have I only missed the playoffs once in my coaching career, I’ve always made it out of the first round.”

The Fury will come out with some fire on Saturday, just as they came out and played hard last week in Indianapolis. One thing I know for sure by watching this team practice is that Luginbill is still coaching his tail off. There is no quit in this man and, to his credit, he will give every ounce he has to his players. I would like to see him return for at least one more year to see what he can do with a full complement of players.

Unleash the Fury

DS Ron Carpenter will not play Saturday due to problems with his knee…QB Billy Dicken had successful surgery on his elbow, and he told me that his Golden Tee Video Golf game will not be affected in anyway… Arizona QB Sherdrick Bonner joined Fury QB Andy Kelly last week as the only signal callers to throw for 600 touchdowns and 30,000 yards…
