Talons Topple Knights

Jamaal Garman returned to his hometown team for the first time in two seasons and picked up the first of his three touchdown receptions midway through the first quarter to give the Knights a 6 – 0 lead. Despite the team’s erratic play, it looked to be the beginning of a wonderful homecoming. Then, in the second half, the wheels came off and Tulsa coasted to a 49 to 40 win.

The Knights’ collapse can be directly tied to dropped passes and turnovers. The Knights coughed up five fumbles, losing three and the Talons picked off two passes en route to outscoring the Knights 35 to 21 in the second half.

WR/DB Jamaal Garman, broke into af2 as a member of the Knights during their inaugural campaign in 2001 and has spent the last two season with the Carolina Cobras, was Macon’s offensive star with five catches for 43 yards and three touchdowns. “We started out real slow,” Garman explained, “but we’ll be better the rest of the season. I guarantee that.” Garman says that, as a result of his experience, he sees himself, “as a leader for these younger guys because they look up to me. So I have to be at 100 percent on every play, which isn’t a problem because I do that anyway.”

Knights’ quarterback Caleb Slover completed 22 of 45 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns. Slover also threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball three times, losing one. He summed the evening up as a “rough night. The guys up front did a great job. I wasn’t under any pressure, I just made some bad throws and had some drops. I guess that’s just part of the first game experience. Everybody comes out a little flat. We just came out too flat. We stayed with them in the first half. We didn’t play very well in the first half. We thought we could come out in the second half and pull this out but we just fell apart in the second half. We’ve just got to regroup and go to Louisville next week and get a win.”

Macon hits the road Saturday looking for their first win of the seasons versus the Louisville Fire. The Knights will be back home April 24th to host the Manchester Wolves.
