Fury Try to Hex VooDoo

The Detroit Fury try to shake off a disappointing loss to Colorado last week as they travel to Bourbon Street to take on the Voodoo Friday night at the New Orleans Arena. Detroit tries to climb back above the .500 mark, while New Orleans looks to keep rolling and up their mark to a surprising 5-1.

The Fury come off a heartbreaker that saw them turn the ball over four times, including two fumbled snaps by Fury QB Andy Kelly. “I don’t know what happened,” said Kelly. “I’ve probably only fumbled two snaps in my entire career, but it happened twice that night.” The turnovers were especially disappointing for Kelly who saw a career performance that featured 375 yards and nine touchdowns go for naught.

Turnovers have been a repeating theme for the Fury, as they are last in the league in turnover margin, something that is not lost on Fury head coach Tom Luginbill. “I’m done talking about it with our guys. They have to make the decision if they want to be a good team and not turn the ball over. I’m finished talking about it.” The Fury have to stop turning the ball over if they want to win.

Defense should be the story this week as these two teams rank in the top eight in the league. The Fury come in at number three, while the Voodoo chime in at number eight. “Their secondary doesn’t play like an expansion team,” said Kelly. “I don’t know if they will come out in zone, or man to man, but they always make plays.” The Voodoo have been holding opponents to 43.8 points per game.

Unleash the Fury

Fury DS Ron Carpenter sat out practice today with a sprained knee ligament, however he will play Friday. He assured me it had nothing do with any kind of Arenafan interview jinx…Let’s see if Fury kicker Mark Lewis’s streak continues. Lewis has been mistaken for New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd in the airport on every road trip so far… Kelly’s 375 passing yards last week was his personal best over his 10 year career…

Rumor Mill

Sources close to the situation tell me that Firebirds coach Steve DeBerg may lose his job as early as this week. Indiana is 0-5 on the season…
