Celebrating the history of the Arena Football League

Q & A with Fury QB Andy Kelly

The Detroit Fury media day offered a little twist this year. They let the media (which is me) partake in an “official” Arena League practice. So after catching a few streak routes from the man that has thrown for the most yards in the history of the Arena game, I tried to sack Fury QB Andy Kelly in a little Q&A.

Arenafan: Andy, your contract runs up at the end of this year. Have you given any thought to what might await you after this season?

Andy Kelly: I just want to play this season as hard as I can. After that, we’ll see what happens. I am getting a little older now, but I want to keep playing as long as I am competitive, and having fun.

Arenafan : Did you do anything different to prepare for this season than what you normally do?

Andy Kelly: I did kind of the same thing I always do. I did lift a little more this season though. I did a lot of running to keep my weight down, and I am definitely stronger.

Arenafan : Since Tom Luginbill took over as coach for his father Al, is there anything different that you notice?

Andy Kelly: Tom is a cut up. He likes to mess with you, and he doesn’t mind if you mess with him back. There is definitely more joking around, but everyone knows that when there is work to be done, we get it done.

Arenafan : Lastly, Andy and probably most importantly, what do you think about the new ball?

Andy Kelly: When I first heard about it, I didn’t think that I would like it. I thought they just did it as a gimmick. I was told they actually did studies to find out the best color to use. Now I don’t know if they actually did that, but the ball has kind of grown on me. I like it. It’s bright and easy to see. When we get into the arena, the receivers should see it more easily.

Andy Kelly and the rest of the Detroit Fury open the season on Thursday, February 5th against the San Jose SaberCats at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
