Frustrated Knights travel to Arkansas for crucial game

A frustrated Macon Knights team is heading to Arkansas on their last regular season road trip. The Knights (8-6) are coming off a five point loss to the Norfolk Nighthawks and find themselves in a position where they have to win their last two games of the season to have a chance to make the playoffs. This weekend’s opponent, the Arkansas Twisters (8-6) are also in the playoff hunt and need a win Saturday as badly as the Knights.

The Knights couldn’t seem to get the second half break they needed last weekend, losing to Norfolk 42-37. Knights’ Offensive Coordinator Tres Sullivan says that the loss left the team frustrated. “They’re frustrated. Especially last week where we had a chance to put ourselves in a good position to get where we wanted to. At the same time they realize that we’re still in this game and all we can do is win the last two games and give ourselves the best chance. That’s all they ask. If we get in, good. If not, at least we went out doing the things we needed to get in.”

Despite the frustration, Sullivan says that the Knights’ mindset remains positive. “We’re just hanging in there. It’s kind of been one of those seasons where not a lot of things have gone our way and we’ve had some tough losses. But we take some solace in that we’re playing pretty good but we’re just not getting the breaks we got last year.”

Despite the loss, the Knights still hold hopes of reaching the postseason. “I don’t know all the scenarios. The bottom line is that we have to win our last two games. I’m not even sure that will get us in. In order for us to give ourselves the best chance we’ve got to win the last two.”

The first of those last two are the Arkansas Twisters, a team that the Knights beat by 14 earlier in the season. Sullivan says that the Twisters are a force to be reckoned with. “They’ve got the same group of players. Their DS leads the league in interceptions, so they’ve done a good job. They beat Tulsa three weeks ago. Probably should have beaten Birmingham who beat them on a last second field goal. They should be 3-0 over their last three games but they’re 2-1. They’re playing pretty good. They’ve got some confidence and they’re playing for a playoff spot in that division over there. So it’s a big game for them as well. A lot is on the line for both teams.”

Kickoff is set for 8:00 (EST) in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
