Arizona spoiled Coach Doug Kay’s return to AWA, but just barely.

Coach Kay was defensive coordinator in Arizona before getting the nod for the top job in Carolina, the other snake team in the League.

The expansion Cobras (2-10) got off to a rocky start when QB Fred McNair fumbled the ball on the Carolina 19 to end their first possession.

In the second quarter, it would be Arizona’s turn. Leading 23-14, QB Sherdrick Bonner was intercepted by Carolina’s Adrian Lunsford at the Carolina 5. Carolina capitalized on the error drawing to 21-23 to end the first half.

Carolina went ahead at the start of the third quarter 28-23. Arizona answered setting up an important two-point margin, 30-28. Arizona defense stopped Carolina on their next possession. Carolina was unable to advance the ball past their 22-yard line. Remy Hamilton’s field goal attempt missed from 43 yards and the third quarter ended with the two-point difference still on the scoreboard.

The scoring in the fourth quarter was just like the TV ad, Arizona, Carolina, Arizona, and Carolina. With the point difference of: nine, two, nine, and two respectively.

Arizona recovered Carolina’s on-side kick with 36 seconds left to secure the “W”.

News and Notes

Another game slipped away from Coach Doug Kay and his new Snakes. QB Fred McNair was 18 of 31 for 282 yards, six TDs and was sacked three times. Dexter Dawson had a good game with eight catches for 109 yards and two TDs.

A look at the statistics has to have the Arizona Coaching staff wondering what to do to jump-start their anemic play. Arizona dominated in time of possession 50:07 to 24:53. Bonner was 20 of 36 for 207 yards and three TDs, his longest pass of the night was only for twenty-five yards! Randy Gatewood led AZ with eight catches for 87 yards and two TDs

The Commissioner was in the house, stopping off on his way back from the Nashville/Orlando game. The Big Man is a favorite with the fans, shaking hands, signing autographs and talking football…

Looking ahead, Arizona (10-2) is on the road to finish the season, New England (8-5) and Iowa (8-4).

Leading the Western Division by a half game, San Jose (11-2) has next week off and then Buffalo at home to finish the year.
