The Detroit Fury named Al Luginbill head coach and general manager at a press conference Wednesday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Coach Luginbill will also bring aboard his son Tom as assistant coach.

Coach Luginbill believes that in the Arena game, the quarterback is the most important position. “Quarterback is our #1 priority,” Luginbill said. “It is also important to make it a total team effort. You can be successful even in today’s day and age, with a total team concept.”

When asked about the area, Luginbill said, “Detroit is place where football is very important.” Luginbill also noted the team’s current roster situation. “We have many health questions on this team; that makes it tough to tell where we will be as far as roster turnover.”

Coach Luginbill has been in the football coaching ranks for 33 years now. He began coaching in college as an assistant at Pasadena City College, followed by a two-year run at Arizona State. He then moved to Wyoming as a defensive backs coach before returning to Arizona State from 1979 until 1985. He then landed the San Diego State head-coaching job in 1988. He was able to turn around the struggling Aztec program, where he successfully recruited current St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk. The Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe then hired Luginbill, where he was head coach and director of football operations. It was in Amsterdam where he coached another current St. Louis Ram, quarterback Kurt Warner. His latest coaching stint was in the XFL, guiding the Los Angles Xtreme to the league championship.

Inside The Fury

Defensive MVP R-Kal Truluck’s status with the Fury is up in the air. As of right now, he is property of the Kansas City Chiefs with whom he signed with in July. WR Shawndell Tucker’s status is still unknown due to an injured knee, and it is not known if he will return in time for the Fury opener in February.
