This Year`s Expansion may bring new rival to SaberCats

A rivalry might be in store for the San Jose SaberCats and the Los Angeles Avengers. Until this year the Arizona Rattlers have been the ‘Cats biggest adversary. Now with the Avengers in the division there is a chance for a bonified north versus south rivalry. Northern Californians hate the Southern Californians – especially in sports. It shouldn’t be long before we see a nice healthy hatred between the Avengers and the SaberCats.

The SaberCats have already defeated the Avengers earlier this season. And with the SaberCats rolling at 10-2, how can the team get up for a game against the 3-9 Avengers? “They are a lot better then we first played them,” said DS Tommy Jones, “They are going to come out to prove themselves.” Jones used to play near Los Angeles with the Anaheim Pirahnas in 1996 and 97. For him it is like going home, “It should be a good game...in a new Arena.”

Two other players are going back down to the Los Angeles area, TE/DL Sam Hernandez and OL/DL Sai Poulivaati. “I really don’t have any connections down there,” Poulivaati said, “It is another game we have to win.”

QB Todd Marinovich is improving since the last time he was clawed by the SaberCats. A couple of weeks ago, he torched the Houston ThunderBears for 10 touchdowns. “We have to worry about what we do,” said DS Lee Cole, who isn’t worried that Marinovich is a former NFL quarterback, “We face a lot of NFL QBs like Sherdrick Bonner of Arizona. If the QB can’t release the ball it doesn’t matter.”

The team has been on an emotional high with a lot of intensity all this week. “A lot of emotion today at practice -- it is good,” said Grieb, “This late in the season it is good to see the defense pushing us in practice to improve”

Mark Grieb’s family has recently been making trips to watch him perform on the road. They offer support by hoisting big “Grieb” signs. Expect to see them again this weekend in Los Angeles. I know I’ll be there.
