In the first of a series of articles planned for this season, we are taking time out today to talk with Hawks starting quarterback Julian Reese. With less than a week before opening day everyone is getting anxious to get the season started.

Coach Foggie brought Julian with him from Amarillo where he played in all 16 games last season. Julian finished the season with a QB rating of 113.55 and threw for 3525 yards with 65 touchdowns while throwing only 11 interceptions. He also gained 223 yards rushing and another 28 touchdowns. Now fans count that up, he scored 93 total touchdowns last season. Think about that for a minute, he scored 93 of the 131 touchdowns scored by the Dusters last season. Now you see why Coach Foggie brought him here to Everett with him.

Julian is from Fort Wayne, Indiana where he graduated from South Side High school. After graduation he went to Indiana State University where he was named to the first team all academic and received all region quarterback honors for the 1999-2001 seasons. He also received second team all conference twice and was named team most valuable players two years straight. During his junior year he was Newcomer of the Year.

His professional experience includes a stint in the NIFL where he was first team all conference, threw for over 50 touchdowns, and added 12 rushing touchdowns in only 8 games. He also played in the Intense football league where he was named player of the year and first team all IFL quarterback. He passed for over 80 touchdowns and added another 22 rushing in 16 games.

The first thing you find out about Julian when you talk to him is that his family is very important to him. He comes from a very close family with 4 sisters and 8 brothers. When asked what his dream home must have he replied "A room for every one of my brother and sisters as well as one for my parents. Growing up we never had our own rooms so that would be my gift to the family."

Getting to know Julian:

Nickname: "Juve"

Are you married or do you have a girlfriend: "I have a girlfriend, Erica Mims"

What pro athlete did you most admire growing up: "Randall Cunningham – It was his style of play, he could run and throw the ball. He was a great athlete. I also admired Ronnie Lott for his determination and the way he knocked guys out. In basketball it was Earvin "Magic" Johnson because he was a pure player. He always made his teammates better and that is what team is all about."

Your best sports memory: "When I was 11 years old, I was sick. I was throwing up so I sat out the first half of the game. I then came in the second half with us down by 14. I caught a pass, threw a pass and returned an interception all for touchdowns to help my team win by 21 points. It was a great game."

If I weren’t playing football I’d be: "Praying and working with children. I would like to be a high school counselor and coach women’s basketball because they never get enough credit."

When it’s time to relax: "I like to read my bible, play basketball, chess, spades, domino’s and I love to go bowling. I have a 175 average, my aunt made me join a bowling league when I was young and I have liked it ever since."

My favorite food is: "Chicken breast and rice."

Best movie I’ve seen lately was: "Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion"

My favorite subject in school was: "Math but I received my degree in Recreational Sports management from Indiana State University."

My first car: "I got it in college; it was a 2001 Plymouth Neon. It was totaled in a rear-end accident."

My mentors in life were: "My Family and I mean my whole family. My mother, father, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles. We are a very close family and they have taught me all of the lessons I have learned in life."

If you are cooking dinner and you can invite any 3 people from any time in history who do you invite and why: "First would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I would love to sit and talk to him and see his thoughts and his vision. Would he be proud or think we need more work? Next would be my first coach ever Darnell Hollins. He was a hard man, he demanded the best out of you and I was only 9! He was more than a coach. I would also want my niece Charmaine Reese. She passed away when she was 6 from Spinal Meningitis. To be honest I would have to invite a lot more that just 3. I would want my parents, all of my brothers and sisters, really my entire family. We are a close family that is always together."

Highlight of your life: "Last year I was able to fly my parents into Amarillo, so they could see me play in a game on Mother’s Day. It was a very special day. I am hoping to do the same thing this year. We are working on it."

On a team note according to the af2 website the following transactions took place on March 23:

PLACING ON RE-ASSIGNMENT
FB/LB Deron Adams
QB Matt Dennison
OL/DL Jack Leavitt
WR/DB Leonard Haynes
K Travis Snyder
OL/DL Derik Stotland

This leaves the Hawks with only one QB (Reese) and no kicker on their roster. I am sure Coach Foggie has someone in mind. We will see in the next few days as the first game of the season is Thursday March 30 at the Events Center. We hope to see you there.
