Seems people were spot on about "Empire" and "Phoenix." Based on replies to the tweet, copyright shenanigans prevent them from going with the Firebirds.

Do you think it'll be like Portland a few years back when the name was already decided beforehand, or will people's votes actually matter? ; ]

I'd say either Fire or Phoenix will be the choice, and if I had to put money on it, I would say Phoenix. Fire would provoke a lawsuit from Kurz, justified or not.

I knew I should have suggested the Albany Tammany Hall or the Albany FALCON PUNCH.

"Fire" is not "Firebirds", he'd have zero case.

And then the announcer can say Fire and the crowd will all yell BIRDS after he says it, haha.

I really like Phoenix here, it makes a ton of sense.

Yeah. A similar thing was tried by the CFL team in Baltimore back in the '90's. It didn't go well for them in the end.

That had nothing to do with Baltimore, as they were the only CFL-USA team making any money. Kinda like if the Rattlers were surrounded in a league made entirely of Dan Newman-owned Voodoo. Oh Wait...

That was them trying to call the team the "Baltimore CFL Colts".... that is a bit different.

Well, it was until they started having their PA announcer announce first downs and scores with "First down by Tracey Ham for your Baltimore CFL..." leading the crowd into shouting "COLTS!" This could easily go the same route if "Fire" were chosen... and it'd result in a similar lawsuit that they would lose.

Actually, they were called then just the "Baltimore Football Club", or the "Baltimore CFLs". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore_Stallions

The "Colts" chant was after the lawsuit, not before. Someone can't sue you because your fans decide to chant something.

It's been 23 years, so my memory's fuzzy on it. The NFL did slap an injunction on the team though when it tried using "CFL Colts." And if the folks in Philbany go with "Fire," I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Kurz filed another suit.

Not great choices but I'd say go with Phoenix for the obvious flaming bird rising from the ashes
- OR Empire as Albany is the capitol or the Empire State.
