A Great Addition for the National Arena League! The team will play at the 12,239 seat DCU Center. [/img]

Cool - good Catch Soul and nalFBfan

Worcester is a great sized market for the NAL. Metro area is 935k. NICE

I wonder if this was the proposed Boston or Providence team? Its kinda in the middle.

Hope its all true - nothing official on the NAL website but leaking is a good way to create buzz, great name too.

The NAL is going to be very strong in 2018, no doubt. The Pirates name was leaked because the team had facebook back up to early, but an official announcement is coming soon.

As for more 2018 expansion, the league is in the final steps of the lease negotiations in five new markets. This means the NAL could have five new teams if the leases are agreed upon. Although late in the process, there is one additional team (making a sixth new team) that is now in the mix.

The majority of 2018 NAL expansion is expected to take place in the next 30-45 days, as new exciting announcements like the Pirates, will be rolling in soon.

Apparently former AFL coach Rick Buffington is the owner. Not sure where he got the money from...

Well... AFL has CBA issues

NAL has had it issues too- gaining and losing the expansion Richmond RoughRiders to the AAL. Monterrey(Mex) Steel are probably out, High Country Grizzlies to AAL. Georgia Firebirds may or may not come back. And the Dayton and Corpus Chrsti teams from 2017 are gone.

But on closer inspection, while outwardly not the best look - these are for the best mostly:

1 - Richmond clearly was not ready financially to be in the NAL
2 - High Country is such a small market - it was the right move for them and the league.
3 - Georgia has a bad arena that limits upside
4 - Dayton and Corpus had to be covered by the league - so no surprise there
5- Monterrey - this is the one that's a shame, but the travel costs associated with this team will now be saved.

So you have 3 not 4 solid franchises, 1 hopeful return Georgia, 1 expansion teams in the NE - Jersey, and 2 more heavily rumors Massachusetts and Orlando - both heavily rumored to be coming. More are likely.

So while we'll see team turnover, its necessary evil and beneficial. If anything I hope they don't get spread to thin.

So whether is 6 or 8 or more teams - 2018 looks like a definite improvement over 2018.

I am not sure that Rick Buffington owns the team. He is definitely involved with the team - he announced on his Facebook page last month that a National Arena League team was coming to Massachusetts. I am not sure why the people at Inside the Arena are reporting that he is the owner.

That's a fair question. At this point nothing has been officially released - so it may not be true or at least misheard or only partially true (eg minority owner).

"Massachusetts Pirates" is a real disappointment in terms of branding. They could just as easily had a name that used the same themes (i.e.,, a team that ostensibly represents the entire state, and a nautical/rebellious bent) with "Bay State Buccaneers."

And no, before you ask, there'd be no trademark issues with the NFL provided the looks weren't similar (e.g., different color scheme, dissimilar logos and wordmarks, etc.).

The dumb thing about it too is that MassPirates.com belongs to the political party or at least it was, the URL just sends you to another site.

The WHOIS for the whole name is privately registered by proxy from Scottsdale, AZ along with Providencepirates.com

Trademark search has Providence Pirates registered on August 29th to some company in Shewsbury, MA related to football.

Found myself proof on an SEC filing in Massachusetts.
http://corp.sec.state.ma.us/CorpWeb/CorpSearch/CorpSummary.aspx?FEIN=001279451&SEARCH_TYPE=1
(if it doesn't work either search for Massachusetts Pirates or use the ID number of 001279451)

Team was originally called the Boston Blizzard from June until August where it switched to Providence Pirates, then it switched to Massachusetts Pirates in September.

Three different corporate names in four months? Wow. That's stability...

That's really good digging!
and makes sense cause the 3 cities Providence, Boston and Worcester are close and they were likely shopping the best 3 yr lease deal. Remember NAL expansion had said Boston and Providence possible expansion - so this may be for both.
