I'm starting a new thread because others are just absurd when it comes to new teams. Sugarland? EUROPE? Give me a BREAK! The AFL has proven that they won't go to those tiny markets by relocating Bossier and Huntsville right after the first season back ... and CERTAINLY not international.

Here is a list of reasonably sizable markets for future teams. ALL of these cities have an arena that host or hosted an NHL/NBA team.

Los Angeles / Anaheim
Boston
Buffalo
Carolina (Charlotte/Raleigh)
Columbus
Denver
Detroit
Houston
Indianapolis
Miami
Minneapolis
New York (new Brooklyn arena being built for Nets) MSG won't work
Portland
Sacramento
San Antonio
Seattle
St. Louis
Tennessee (Nashville/Memphis)
Washington D.C.

There it is. When more teams join the league I GUARANTEE it will be from the list of cities above.

Now, let's have REASONABLE and LOGICAL discussion about expansion potentials.

thank you! i agree most of these discussions are nonsensical. i thought i heard somewhere there were 5 markets kurz was working on one of which was in florida so miami. anothere one is LA i gotta believe new york is one as well. that leaves 2 i think indianapolis is one of them because there was talk about milwaukee moving there which wont happen. the other one im just guessing might be detroit just because they were one of the original afl teams. so lets break it down the most likely markets in my opinion are
1LA
2New York
3Miami
4Indianapolis
5Detroit

if i remember right Kurz said he wanted to get a team back in Columbus, they just had to find the right ownership to do it. He talked to the Bluc Jackets owners and said they werent interested but would welcome a team back into Nationwide Arena so long as its a good deal for them

Seattle is a GREAT city for this kind of thing. They are really missing out on a great market.

Plus, it'd be good to get in on the market while the only other team that plays in KeyArena is the WNBA's Storm. If they wait too much longer, they could have to compete with a new NBA team or a hockey team or something. Get in while the getting is good.

I think Denver should be a priority. Denver has proven consistently stable for not only the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA but also smaller leagues like Major League Soccer, Major League Lacrosse, and the National Lacrosse League.

The Crush always drew well, Pepsi Center is more than suitable for Arenaball, and there are three realistic TV partners here: Altitude TV (owned by Kroenke Sports, the owners of the Nuggets, Avalanche, Rapids, Mammoth), FSN Rocky Mountain, and Comcast's local channel.

They should approach Josh Kroenke about a potential ownership. Stan Kroenke was minority owner of the Crush (along with Elway and Broncos owner Pat Bowlen), so I'm sure the league has been in contact with him.

Frankly, I'm baffled that "mid major" leagues like the WNBA and AFL don't have franchises in Denver right now. If we'll show up and watch Major League Lacrosse, we'll show up for Arenaball.

TIME AND TIME AND TIME AND TIME AND TIME AND TIME AGAIN

If Seattle DID get an AFL team, the KeyArena WOULD NOT BE A GOOD BUILDING.. Why do you think the NBA left to begin with? Why do you think the WHL hockey team built their own venue in the suburbs, and why do you think all rumors of the Storm buying the Yard Dawgz last summer were squashed?? Seattle needs a new building or a major renovation first if they want to make it work with season ticket sales.. Otherwise, it would just be yet another failing market.. Which IS NOT good for the AFL.

And I'll let you know, Seattle is a really front running town, if the team isn't winning, they don't even want to be part of it.. Why do you think the Mariners draw under 15,000 some nights?? Cause they have been on the top 10 worst teams in baseball (2nd worst last year) since 2004..

So all I'm saying, is that Seattle might work, but only if they have a new building or major renovation on the way, KeyArena would work for a season or two, but would never give the franchise the number figures they were hoping for.

For right now, let's try and have a season in the AFL for the first time in 24 years where we DON'T have a folding or relocating team, shall we?

You're saying these things because you are from Spokane and we all know that you all hate Seattle for some reason. No big deal. Everyone in Canada hates Toronto, everyone in Texas hates Dallas. We get it.

The arena is not that big of a deal. This isn't the NBA or NHL and I don't think the league is in a position to demand a new arena. Had the OKC negotiations not failed, the league would not have had a problem going to Seattle. If a team came to Seattle and a new arena was built within the next few years for a new NBA or NHL team, the AFL team would just move there.

Seattle is a GREAT sports town. Best MLS fans in the country and probably the loudest NFL fans as well.

The arena does matter. The AFL product does not work well in basketball only facilities. When the 1st row in the endzone is halfway up the nets it looks like crap.

Vegas (Thomas and Mack) and New Orleans are examples of this.

The AFL was meant to be played in hockey arenas. Just because it can "fit" does not mean is should be played there.

What about Louisville too? They just opened a new arena by the river.
And about Indy, if Conseco Fieldhouse would get off its high horse, a team probably would of been here this season. Wanting to charge $40,000 per game is way too high. Who does that? Crazy.

I also checked out the list of possible expansion cities and here are my choices:

(1) Washington, DC
(2) St. Louis
(3) Detroit
(4) Seattle
(5) Oakland

Columbus would be suitable, since the Nationwide Arena is currently home to the Columbus Blue Jackets (it was also home to the Columbus Destroyers from 2004 through 2008)

I'd like to see San Antonio get another chance at arena football

I'd love to see Anaheim get another chance at arena football

I would rule out Houston as an AFL city (the owner of the ThunderBears did not advertise or promote the team)

Albany did very well as an AFL city and deserves another crack

Portland, Oregon did well in its three seasons in the AFL (1997-99)

I would also rule out Madison Square Garden as a home to an AFL team (the Knights (2-10 in 1988) and the CityHawks (5-23 in its two seasons) just did not gain the fans' interest)

Joe Louis Arena would be an ideal home for another Detroit AFL team

Oracle Arena in Oakland would be a good place for an AFL team (it was once home to a NHL team from 1967 through 1976)

San Diego once had an af2 team, but an AFL team would be nice

Any comments?

Me too, but the chances are slim. I'm not sure there's enough interest and the Spurs control what sports can come to the city and where they can play. The Spurs constantly block events (even concerts) wanting to use both the AT&T Center and Freeman Coliseum. The Alamodome is too big and the set up was poor for the Spurs and Hockey.

Agreed. Bring back the Destroyers! Loved that logo too!

Hmm, I don't see that happening. I wish the Austin Wranglers did better though.

I'd rather see LA.

Quote:

That was a long time ago and I believe the league owned the team for a couple of years. Houston could work.

Quote:

Hmm, I disagree. Too small of a market. The AFL is concentrating on bigger cities and I'd love to see the Firebirds return ... but to Indianapolis.

Then why did they relocate? Portland could work but you need Seattle there as well for the rivalry. I'm still not sold on Spokane long term.

I agree that MSG isn't a good location but I disagree with your logic. 1988 is completely irrelevant now and the CityHawks record is less than relevant. MSG just does not do well with sports like this. I think they even tried indoor lacrosse there once. Epic failure.

Nassau Coliseum will be torn down soon so the best place for a NY franchise would be in Brooklyn in that brand new arena they are building for the Nets (and possibly the Islanders).

Detroit is one of the hardest hit cities during the recession. Not a good time but in the future, yes!

The Bay Area has San Jose. That's all they need for now.

I don't see that happening. Ever been to San Diego? No one likes to go indoors for anything. It's just too perfect outside all the time. Notice that they don't have an NBA or NHL team but have the Padres and Chargers?

Have all teams come back next year and add New York and Los Angeles. Or at least one of them. I think this league needs a team in one of the top 2 media markets. Didn't the Dragons do decent on Long Island? Put a team back there maybe. Much better then in NJ or MSG imo.
If not one of them Columbus and Buffalo would be great too.

I looked at the attendance history on arenafan.com and the Dragons were consistently among the worst in attendance.

I think the arena may have something to do with it because the Islanders haven't done well in attendance since the 80's.

My top five for now
1. Los Angeles: its the second biggest media market in the USA and would give San Jose a in state rival. Rename them the Avengers and try to bring back a few former players with ties to the city.

2. New York: The biggest media market in the USA, and watch the Philly NYC rivalry continue in yet another sport. Rename them the Dragons.

3. Denver: Because of the fact that they were supported well and it brings another team into the western part of the league. Im not a big fan of the Crush nickname (to much like the Rush) but whatever the Denver fans want.

4. Indianapolis: A good arenaball market and with the return of the "Firebirds" it would add another team to the Central.

5. Columbus: Gives Cleveland an instate rival and Columbus fans a team to cheer for again.

Future five
1. Detroit: Bring back the Drive
2. Baltimore
3. Houston
4. St Louis
5. Boston
