Terry Malley Returns to the SaberCats

 SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose SaberCats announced today the return of Terry Malley to the coaching staff.

“Coach Malley is incredibly detail oriented and taught me everything I know about being a head football coach,” said Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet. “He is the best coach I have ever been around, and it is an honor to have him back with the SaberCats organization.”

Malley originally joined the expansion SaberCats in 1994 as the Director of Football Operations. From 1995 to 2006, he held the position of General Manager and from 1999-2008, he joined Head Coach Darren Arbet’s staff as the Offensive Coordinator.

“The SaberCats organization is pleased to have Coach Malley back on the staff,” said Owner Dave Fry. “His experience and knowledge will be a great benefit in molding our offense back into Championship form.”

In 1999, Malley’s first as offensive coordinator, the SaberCats offense averaged 50.8 points per game, good for seventh best in the AFL. In 2000, the SaberCats offense jumped up to an AFL-best average of 62.2 points per game, helping San Jose to its second Western Division Title. The next year, the SaberCats earned another Western Division behind the second-highest scoring attack in the league, averaging 59.4 points per game.

In 2002, San Jose’s offense paced the league with a 62.7 point per game average, 8.7 more points per game than the next highest scoring team, en route to the team’s third straight Western Division Title and first ArenaBowl Championship.

The SaberCats offense continued its dominant run under Malley in 2003, averaging 60.3 points per game and earning the team’s fourth straight division title.

In 2004, San Jose earned their second ArenaBowl Championship in three seasons with the help of the second-ranked scoring offense in the AFL at 55.3 points per contest.

During the 2005 season, the SaberCats were once again back on top as the highest scoring offense in the Arena Football League, posting an average of 59.1 points per game. In 2006, San Jose earned its sixth division title behind Malley’s offense, which notched 56.1 points per game, third best in the AFL.

The SaberCats earned their seventh Western Division Title and third ArenaBowl trophy in 2007, a season in which Malley’s offense averaged 63.3 points per game, second highest in the league.

In 2008, Malley’s final season as offensive coordinator for the SaberCats, his offense averaged 59.1 points per game while earning the franchise’s eighth Western Division Title and a trip to the ArenaBowl.

For the last six years, Malley has held a plethora of positions with the San Jose State football program. During his time with the Spartans, he coached the wide receivers, running backs and tight ends in addition to being the team’s recruiting coordinator for last five seasons. When Malley first joined the Spartans in 2009, he was the assistant head coach of the offense.

With over 35 years of coaching experience, Malley roots are true to the Bay Area. He spent two years at San Jose’s Leland High (1976-77) and two years at Moreau High in Hayward (1978-79) before joining his father, Pat Malley, at Santa Clara University from 1980 to 1984.

In 1985, Malley was named head coach of the Broncos and led them to a 47-39-1 win-loss record over the next eight seasons. In his inaugural season as head coach in 1985, he was named Western Football Conference Coach of the Year and earned a conference championship with Santa Clara.

As a player, Malley played quarterback, was named team-captain and was a four-year letter winner for the Broncos during his four seasons (1972-75) at Santa Clara.
