SaberCats All-Time leading receiver James Roe returns to San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA – The SaberCats today announced San Jose’s all-time leading receiver James Roe has returned to the SaberCats for the remainder of the 2011 season.

“James Roe is one of the greatest wide receivers to ever play Arena Football,” said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. “His addition will only bolster a deep receiving corps and we couldn’t be more excited that he is rejoining us for the 2011 season.”

Roe (6-1, 210) holds the SaberCats franchise records for receptions (762), receiving yards (9,452), receiving touchdowns (232) and points scored (1,450) during his nine seasons (2000-08) in the AFL, all with the SaberCats. He totaled 102 receptions for 1,076 yards and 30 touchdowns in his last season with San Jose. A three-time All-Ironman pick (2003-05), Roe earned second-team All-Arena honors at wide receiver in 2007 after setting career-highs in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,560) and receiving touchdowns (40). He was a member of all three SaberCats ArenaBowl championships, leading San Jose with 115 receptions for 1,310 yards and 29 touchdowns in his postseason career.

Roe joined the SaberCats in 2000 following three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-98 after being drafted by the team in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. During his time with Baltimore, he totaled 15 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown in 20 games (seven starts), while serving as a contributor on special teams with 11 kick returns for 229 yards to go along with 17 punt returns for 159 yards.

Roe played four years (1992-95) at Norfolk State finishing with career totals of 239 receptions for 4,468 yards and 46 touchdowns earning consensus Division II All-America honors for the Spartans. He finished his career ranked second all-time among collegiate receivers behind 49ers WR Jerry Rice (4,693), third among Division II reception leaders (239) and fourth in touchdown receptions (46). During his career he recorded 22, 100-yard games and 16 games with two or more touchdown catches, while notching a reception in 41 straight games, one in each game he played. Roe registered his best season as a junior when he caught 77 passes for 1,454 yards and 17 touchdowns.

He earned all-state honors in football where he played wide receiver and defensive back at Henrico (VA) High School. He also was an all-league selection in basketball and track.
