Former Storm standout Nyle Wiren joins coaching staff

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm are pleased to announce the hiring of Nyle Wiren to the coaching staff as well as the acquisition of kicker Massimo Scaccia (Scotch-ya) announced Head Coach Dave Ewart.

“Nyle will be a good addition to the staff,” said Ewart.  “He understands the game and has a great amount of experience that he can draw upon to coach up our younger players.”

Wiren will coach the defensive line and linebackers as well as coordinate special teams  He retired with the Storm at the end of the 2008 season after playing 11 seasons in Tampa bay (1998-2008).  Defensively, he recorded 158 tackles, 16 sacks, 12 forced fumbles, four interceptions.  Offensively he scored eight touchdowns, rushed for 109 yards and had 98 yards receiving.  During his time with the Storm he played defensive end, mack and jack linebacker, fullback and on the offensive line.  He earned All-Arena Honors in 2004 and as a senior at Kansas State he earned All-America honorable mention honors.  He is an active member of the Tampa Bay community and in particular the Child’s Cancer Center.

“Massimo has a big leg,” added Ewart.  “He trained very hard in the off season and we have high expectations for him.”

Scaccia (6-foot-1, 205 lbs., Avila) spent his rookie season in the AFL with the Jacksonville Sharks in 2010.  He filled in as the Sharks kicker when Paul Edinger went down with an injury.  He connected on 27 PATs in five games.  While at Avila, Scaccia was a two-time NAIA All-America nominee and two-time NAIA National Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Storm head to Jacksonville today to face the Sharks at 7:00 PM in the first of two preseason games.  The team returns to the St. Pete Times Forum and hosts the Orlando Predators Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 PM.  The game is free for all fans, doors open at 6:30 PM.

The Storm are universally recognized as one of the leading teams in the Arena Football League, setting numerous attendance records in its 23 years. The team won world championships in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2003, winning the last championship in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,496 at the St. Pete Times Forum.
