Bakersfield defeats visiting Laredo 33-6
Sunday July 1, 2007
The offensive outburst that the Bakersfield Blitz (5-7) have been anxiously waiting for wasn’t there quite yet, but the defensive hustle more than made up for that deficiency in a 33-6 victory over the visiting Laredo Lobos (1-11) on Saturday night.
DL Ben McCombs (Mid America Nazarene, ’02) and DB Nathan Munson (Upper Iowa, ’01) lead the way in keeping the Lobos out of the endzone the entire night.
“Now that we have the right taste back in our mouths, we’re ready to make the charge,” said Blitz Head Coach Gary Compton (East Texas State University, ’90). “I’m proud of what this group accomplished tonight.”
McCombs racked up 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and a blocked field goal on the night. McCombs, who also plays on most special teams units, was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Game for his outstanding effort.
“It was nice to make some plays tonight and help the team get this one,” said McCombs.
Munson snagged 2 interceptions and broke up Laredo passes on Saturday.
“Our vets stepped up tonight and made some outstanding plays,” said Coach Compton.
QB Dan Riley (Quincy, ’05) started the night playing Jack Linebacker where he collected 1.5 tackles. Forced to get under center when QB Chad Elliott (Syracuse, ’01) was injured in the second quarter, Riley finished up the night 9-18 for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran in a score in the 4th quarter.
“We sure needed this one. I’m glad I could do my part and help us get it,” said Riley who was playing in his third af2 game.
WR Rennard Reynolds (Alcorn State, ’02) and WR DeRonn Finley (Idaho State, ’02) each added 2 touchdowns for Bakersfield.
The Blitz will travel to Boise next weekend to take on the Burn on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The next home game is set for Saturday, July 14th when the Blitz will host former defensive coordinator Cedric Walker and his Everett Hawks.
