Gladiators assigned DL Shubert Bastien, WR Larry Beavers, OL Kelby Johnson

CLEVELAND – The AFL’s Cleveland Gladiators, proudly presented by Unique Home Solutions, announced Thursday that the team was assigned DL Shubert Bastien, WR Larry Beavers and OL Kelby Johnson and also activated WR Tom Gilson from the Gladiators’ Refused to Report List.

A 6’5”, 270 lb. native of Riviera Beach, FL, Bastien, 23, played his college football at Middle Tennessee State and contributed one solo tackle and one assist for the Gladiators earlier this season.

A veteran of five AFL seasons from 2011-16, Beavers, 32, supplied 165 receptions, 2189 receiving yards and 28 receiving touchdowns over that span for the Iowa Barnstormers, New Orleans VooDoo and the Gladiators. Last season with Cleveland, Beavers, a 5’10”, 170 lb. native of Annapolis, MD, posted 50 receptions for the Gladiators, along with 703 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches. Beavers additionally logged 91 kick returns last season for Cleveland for 1494 return yards and one kick return for a touchdown.

A 6’7”, 300 lb. native of Bowie, MD, Johnson, 24, spent two collegiate seasons at Louisville following a previous stint at the University of Virginia. Following an impressive showing at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp, Johnson earned a free agent contract with the NFL club in 2016. Gilson, a 6’2”, 200 lb. UMass product, notched 188 receptions, 1894 receiving yards and 22 touchdown grabs spanning three AFL seasons from 2014-16 with the Gladiators, LA KISS and the Portland Steel. In 2014, Gilson caught three balls for 42 yards and one touchdown for Cleveland and last season, the 28 year-old native of Mansfield, MA logged 132 catches for 1303 yards and 14 touchdowns for Portland.

The Gladiators also announced Thursday that WR Collin Taylor and DL Willie McGinnis were placed on league suspension and WR Troy Pascley was placed on Inactive Reserve.

Additionally, there will be two other opportunities for fans to experience the Tailgate Zone during the remaining home games of the 2017 regular season as the team hosts “Go Pink Night” on Saturday June 24th and “Fan Salute Night presented by the Brew Kettle” on Saturday, July 8th.
