Washington returns to action against Tampa Bay
In their first home game since April 22, the Washington Valor (1-2) are back at Verizon Center this Sat., May 13 for a showdown with the Tampa Bay Storm (3-1) – the first-ever meeting between the two franchises. Washington’s last outing was a Week 4 loss to Cleveland before their second bye week of the season in Week 5. Tampa Bay is coming off a thrilling, 62-55 win over the Baltimore Brigade last weekend in Baltimore.
VALOR PLAYER TO WATCH: WR GREGG CARR – At 6’6”, 230 pounds, Carr stands as a physical mismatch for just about every defensive back he faces up with. The three-year AFL veteran and Florida State Seminole is coming off his best game of the season – a nine-catch, 100-yard performance that featured short-yardage touchdowns of nine and eight yards. Carr is second on the team in yards per reception (12.6), trailing only Mike Washington (13.2).
STORM PLAYER TO WATCH: QB RANDY HIPPEARD – The Storm are led by their QB, Randy Hippeard, a five-year AFL veteran who leads the league in completions, attempts, completion percentage, passing touchdowns, passing yards and passer rating. Hippeard is coming off a stellar Week 4 performance, leading Tampa Bay with 297 yards and eight touchdowns.
MATCHUP TO WATCH: VALOR DBs vs. STORM WRs – Valor DB Tracy Belton, who is tied for the league lead with three interceptions, and the rest of the Washington defensive backfield will have their work cut out for them against a Storm receiving corps highlighted by Joe Hills and Lamark Brown. Hills’ 40 receptions and 12 receiving touchdowns are tops in the AFL, while his 382 receiving yards rank third. Brown is second in yards, third in receptions and fourth in touchdowns. Last week against the Baltimore Brigade, the duo combined for 24 receptions, 217 yards and seven touchdowns.
