Thursday February 2, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Baltimore Brigade added former Baltimore Ravens DB Varmah Sonie to their roster for their inaugural season presented by MedStar Health.
Sonie, who is entering his fourth year in the Arena Football League, was a member of the Portland Thunder for two seasons. During that time he received First Team All-Arena honors and set a franchise record of 86 total tackles as a rookie. Last season as a member of the Orlando Predators, Sonie had another stellar season, recording 86 tackles. He has spent time with both the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“This is a significant signing for the Baltimore Brigade,” said head coach Omarr Smith. “Varmah Sonie is a dynamic player and he is considered one of the best defensive backs in the AFL. He has an unrivaled competitive spirit, a thirst to be great and an ability to make things difficult for opposing receivers. We are fortunate to have a player of his ilk as a building block for the Baltimore Brigade football program.”
Sonie was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection during his collegiate career at the University of Northern Iowa. His collegiate career numbers include 158 tackles and 16 pass breakups.
Joining Sonie is veteran DE Calvin Fance who is entering his fifth season in the AFL. Fance has played for the Philadelphia Soul and Orlando Predators and has recorded 67 total tackles in his career. He attended Angelo State where he earned Division II All-America honors.
Rookie WR Lavasier Tuinei was assigned to the Brigade after having played with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and the Guangzhou Power of the China Arena Football League. He has been part of the training camps of the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. He played at the University of Oregon and was named the offensive Player of the Game of the 2012 Rose Bowl.
Rounding out the new additions is Rookie DL Justin Taimatuia of Boise State University. He attended Fort Scott Community College in Kansas where he earned All-Conference Honorable Mention before transferring to Boise State. While at Boise State, Taimatuia was a Piesman Award candidate and finished with 50 tackles.
