Monday September 26, 2016
After winning the 2016 Arena Bowl Championship with the Philadelphia Soul, Head Coach Clint Dolezel now will try to work his magic with the Beijing Lions in the China Arena Football League. He may be well on his way with two of his championship players anchoring his new offensive line.
Wayne Tribue (6-3 – 330) and Neal Tivis (6-5 – 320) will set the tone up front while wide out Collin Taylor will display his skills as one of the top receivers in the league. Chinese receivers Juxing Zhang, Erwin Sennett Wu and Xiao Zha Zhang will look for make an impact along with American athletes Torez Jones and James Romain for Quarterback Luke Collis.
Romain will lead the defense from the secondary with help from Yao Lam Tsu and Jones. Louis Nzegwu at 6’3” – 260 will help to power the defensive line along with the likes of Calvin Fance, Tian Hao Zhang and former MMA Heavyweight contender Paul Cheng who returns to play football in his home country.
The Shanghai Skywalkers could be called “Receivers City” when it comes to their talent in the China Arena Football League. It all starts with the MVP of the 2016 AFL Arena Bowl and rolls on from there.
Shawn Kauleinamuku caught three touchdown passes in the Philadelphia Soul’s championship victory over Arizona. Now he will lead a team of receivers that includes Christian Wise, Shuai Liu, Mike Washington, Sergio Gilliam, Yu Jeong Jong and Zhhen Nan Shao toward the first ever China Bowl.
Quarterback Shane Austin has the credentials to make the connections.
On the other side of the ball defensive back Dwayne Hollis and Lei Wang will team up with Wise. Line backers Xu Bing Gu and Ye Tian will contribute along with Travis Miller (6-5, 335), Justin Lawrence (6-3 310) and Willie McGinnis(6-3, 290) on the defensive front.
The Guangzhou Power are considered by some to be a favorite in the China Arena Football League and with good reason. In a new, league experience can take a team a long way and the silver and black have one of the most experienced coaches in Ernesto Purnsley. The architect of the defense for the 2005 AFL champion Colorado Crush has almost 20 years of coaching experience.
The Power will feature linebacker Tyre Glasper (6-3– 270) along with defensive back Virgil Gray. Baiyang He, ( 6-4 – 286) and Xu Gua (6-2, 275) will also add size on defense.
Offensively wide outs Duane Brooks and Lavasier Tuinei will be big targets for quarterback J. J. Raterink. Raterink, who broke Kurt Warner’s passing records with the Iowa Barnstormers, will also have former Wuhan Institute standout Xun Da Qiu as a target. The offensive line features former Virginia Tech standout David Wang (6-2, 300) and Dashawn Johnson 6’4”, 315 of William Paterson University.
The team with the most talented Chinese players in the China Arena Football League could be the Shenzhen Naja. The teams’ top three draft choices were Chinese players. Head coach J. W. Kenton is counting on his first round selection, defensive lineman Feng Do (6-2 – 270) to make an impact and third round pick, center Jia Qi Zhang (6-2 – 297) to anchor the offensive front.
Still it’s his second round pick, wide receiver/defensive back Shida Wang, who could become a household name in China. Wang has explosive speed and soft hands which will make him an offensive weapon. His cover skills as a defensive back will give opposing receives all they can handle. He could become his country’s first star in its first professional football league.
Quarterback Dak Britt might be the most elusive running QB in the CAFL and DB/WR Tristan Purifoy can match him stride for stride which will cause problems for every defense in the league. Britt will be backed up by Tao Yu. The 24 year old from Shanghai University is considered by most to be the best Chinese quarterback in the league.
On Defense, defensive back Terrance Smith has taken on the responsibilities to help coach the Chinese players who play his position. Shida Wang, Yi Hong Lin, and Sze Ting Lui will benefit from his expertise along with assistance from John Keith Jr. The D-line features Robert Williams Jr (6-4, 280) and Elvis Matagi (6-4, 310)
The Dalian Dragon Kings, coached by Terry Bates, boast size and strength as they open their CAFL schedule.
On the offensive line Jordan Mosley (6-3, 325) , Jarrod Hernandez (6-4, 260 , 338) and Steve Tang (6-4 260) will be protecting Quarterback Phillip Garcia. Talib Wise , Maurice Woodard and Zhen Ma will be counted on to make plays.
Defensively, Kent Richardson, Bing Wang and Darnell Burks will provide coverage while Siguang Yan, Tang and Anthony Sanders III supply the muscle under the leadership of linebacker Ameer Ismail.
The Qingdao Clipper are hoping that a Virginia Tech connection will translate well in China. Former Hokies quarterback Bryan Randall and wide out Xavier Boyce will look to set the pace for roach Rod Miller’s team.
Receivers Reggie Gray and Shi Lei He will also be counted on to make plays. They will get that chance playing behind Jason Holman (6-3 – 315) and Shou Sun (6-2 -3 30).
They are just as big on defense with Matt Moss (6-3 – 265 and Jake Metz (6-6 – 265) The Secondary is experienced with Tanner Varner, Joe Phinisee, Hao Ran Yu and Rayshaun Kizer who round out a formidable defense.
