Tampa Bay acquires three-year veteran Cortez Stubbs; Adds rookie defensive lineman Kendrick Washington

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm is pleased to announce that it has acquired veteran defensive back Cortez Stubbs and rookie defensive lineman Kendrick Washington.

“Cortez is a professional that has AFL experience,” said Storm Head Coach Lawrence Samuels. “He’s become one of the top defensive backs in this League and his presence will be a welcome addition on and off the field.”

Stubbs (5-foot-9, 180 lbs., Concordia) joins the Storm for his fourth season in the Arena Football League. The former Concordia Hornet spent the 2015 AFL season with New Orleans, starting in 14-of-16 games for the VooDoo. He led the team with 90.0 tackles, four interceptions, nine pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Stubbs began his professional career with the Orlando Predators in 2013. He would play in a total of eight games over the 2013 and 2014 seasons for the Predators. For his career, Stubbs has started in 18-of-24 games and recorded 111.0 total tackles, 14 pass breakups, five interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Washington (6-foot-4, 275 lbs., Florida A&M) enters his first season in a Storm uniform. The former Rattler started in 14-of-30 games for Florida A&M and recorded 36.0 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, an interception, a pass breakup, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

“Kendrick has played indoor football several years now,” said Samuels. “He adds speed and explosiveness to our defensive line which will help improve our pass rush this season.”

Washington began his professional career with the Chicago Rush in 2011. He would also go on to play for the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League, helping the team win a 2015 PIFL Championship along with current Storm players David Washington and Terrence Ebagua.
