AFL Veteran Defensive Back Assigned to Shock Roster
SPOKANE, WA (February 10, 2015) – The Spokane Shock have been assigned defensive back Sergio Gilliam to the 2015 roster.
Gilliam (6-2, 190, Clemson) joins the Shock for his sixth season as a member of the Arena Football League after spending the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Power. In 2014, Gilliam recorded 61 total tackles (52 solo, 18 assisted), three interceptions and 20 pass break-ups in 18 games. During his first season with the Power in 2013, Gilliam registered 90 total tackles (77 solo, 26 assisted) with eight interceptions and 17 pass break-ups.
Prior to joining the Power, Gilliam spent the 2012 and 2011 seasons as a member of the Kansas City Command where he led the team in interceptions each season. In 2012, he recorded 70.5 total tackles (62 solo, 17 assisted) and six interceptions while in 2011 he registered nine interceptions to go along with 79.5 total tackles (72 solo, 15 assisted). During his rookie season as a member of the AFL in 2010, Gilliam would split time between the Arizona Rattlers and Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz on his way to recording 35.5 total tackles and three interceptions in 12 total contests.
“Experience in the defensive secondary is invaluable in arena football,” said Shock Head Coach Andy Olson. “The opportunity to bring in a veteran like Sergio is not only huge in terms of the immediate impact he’ll have on the field, but also the development of the young talent on our roster. His knowledge of the game and leadership will be a great addition as we prepare for training camp.”
As a member of the af2’s Spokane Shock in 2009, Gilliam would play a key role in the franchise’s second ArenaCup championship win in just their fourth season as a franchise. Gilliam would go on to earn second team all-af2 honors as the Shock would go on to defeat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers by a final score of 74-27.
During his rookie season in 2008 as a member of the af2’s Spokane Shock, Gilliam received rookie of the year and all-af2 first-team honors after breaking the all-time af2 interception record with 16 in a single-season. After a fast start in 2008 with three interceptions in each of his first two games, Gilliam earned defensive player of the week recognition each week. He also led the af2 with 41 total passes defended. The 2008 season would mark the Shock’s second trip to the ArenaCup in just their third season as a franchise, but they would fall short of their second championship victory by a final score of 55-56 to the Tennessee Valley Vipers.
Gilliam played his collegiate football at the Clemson where he was a two-year started and four-year letterman for the Tigers. During his four seasons, he played in 42 total contests including nine as a starter on his way to recording 61 career tackles and seven passes defended. He played in three bowl games during his time as a Tiger, including the 2004 Peach Bowl, the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl and the 2006 Music City Bowl.
The Shock hosts the home opener for its tenth electrifying season against the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Spokane Arena (720 W Mallon).
