Caesar Rayford activated from Other League Exempt
Tuesday January 6, 2015
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that defensive lineman Caesar Rayford has been activated from the Arena Football League’s Other League Exempt list. The move makes Rayford eligible to join the Jacksonville active roster after he spent the last two seasons in the National Football League.
The 28-year-old Rayford (6’7”, 265) first joined the Sharks via the Offseason Assignment Process in September of 2013. At the time, Rayford was a member of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys’ active roster, having just been traded to Dallas from the Indianapolis Colts. Rayford spent the majority of the 2013 NFL season with the Cowboys, recording a total of five tackles. Most recently, Rayford logged stints in 2014 with both the Calgary Stampeders and the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
Before his time in the NFL and CFL, Rayford spent four seasons in the AFL with the Utah Blaze. A consistent performer throughout his career, Rayford has totaled at least six sacks in each of his campaigns in the league. He enjoyed a breakout season in 2011, earning First-Team All-Arena honors after racking up 10 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups. For his career, Rayford has totaled 29.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 16 pass breakups.
Prior to the start of his AFL career, Rayford helped the Spokane Shock capture the ArenaCup X title during the 2009 season, when Spokane competed in af2. Rayford also logged time with the B.C. Lions’ practice roster in 2009. Rayford played collegiate football at the University of Washington after attending Bethel High School in Spanaway, Wa.
In another Tuesday transaction, the Sharks announced that wide receiver Chris Summers has also been activated from Other League Exempt. The Sharks originally acquired Summers via a trade with the Los Angeles KISS during the 2014 season. A Jacksonville native who attended Ribault High School and Liberty University, Summers has spent time with the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills organizations.
