Shock Assigned QB Warren Smith
Wednesday October 22, 2014
SPOKANE, Wash. (October 21, 2014) – The Shock have been assigned quarterback Warren Smith to the 2015 roster.
Smith (6-1, 205, Maine) joins the Shock for his first season as a member of the Arena Football League after playing the last two seasons in the Professional Indoor Football League, most recently with the Trenton Freedom, where he led his team a playoff berth and was named the 2014 PIFL Most Valuable Player.
Over the past two seasons in the PIFL, Smith recorded a league high 24 consecutive starts and racked up 5,582 passing yards on 492 completions. In 12 games during the 2014 season with the Freedom, Smith rushed 54 times for 364 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing a league high 248 passes on 388 attempts (63.9 percent, 107.43 rating) for 2,589 yards and 46 touchdowns.
During his time with the Freedom in 2012, Smith also had the opportunity to be coached by former Arena Football League quarterback Ryan Venna who spent four years in the AFL and was most recently with the Philadelphia Soul in 2011.
Prior to his two seasons in the PIFL, Smith spent time in the German Football League with the Dresden Monarchs. He also worked out for the former Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League prior to the 2013 AFL season.
Smith began his collegiate football career at Iona College, however, the school dropped the football program following the 2008 season which prompted Smith to transfer to the University of Maine. As a senior at Maine in 2011, Smith completed 64.3 percent of his passes for a single-season school record 3,122 yards; leading his team to a 9-4 record and a spot in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision national quarterfinals while also earning Second-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors.
“Warren is a very talented athlete at the quarterback position,” said Shock Head Coach Andy Olson. “With two of years of indoor experience under his belt in a league that plays very similar rules to the AFL, we believe he has the capability to take that next step and be a special player for us here in Spokane.”
