Shock Assigned Veteran Matangi Tonga
Tuesday October 7, 2014
SPOKANE, Wash. (October 2, 2014) – The Shock have been assigned defensive lineman and linebacker Matangi Tonga to the 2015 roster.
Tonga (6-2, 285, Houston) joins the Shock for his fourth-year in AFL after playing the 2012-2014 seasons as with the Iowa Barnstormers. Over his first three seasons, Tonga has recorded 53 total tackles (35 solo), 6.5 sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, nine pass break ups and 2 interceptions. Prior to his rookie season in the AFL, Tonga spent time with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys after completing his final collegiate season at the University of Houston. Prior to joining the Cougars, Tonga played junior college football at the College of San Mateo where he helped his team to a 10-2 record and was an All-America First-Team selection.
“Experience is such a huge part of this league, so the opportunity to bring in a guy like Matangi that has competed for multiple seasons is always exciting,” said Shock Head Coach Andy Olson. “We love the physicality and aggression that he plays with, so pairing that with his versatility as an athlete will make him a strong addition to our defensive front.”
